Was it circa 2017 AFL Grand Final for the Adelaide Crows
It was a flashback to one of the darker days in the history of the Adelaide Footy Club AFL grand final day 2017 was a day to forget for anyone associated for the Crows-its effects haunted them for all of 2018 and if Round 1 is anything to judge by they are still yet to shake those demons.
Adelaide Crows a poor loss!
Here is an excerpt from our AFL tips and betting Round 1review of the Adelaide Crows game against Hawthorn, you can read the full review at https://itipsports.com.au/afl-tips-round-1-review/
“Adelaide Crows were another example of turning up, thinking they would just take the points after burying the terrible season of 2018. Don Pyke went about “making footy fun” to try and bond the group together. Big mistake for two reasons, one it wasn’t genuine it was a manufactured environment that was falsely jovial and the focus went to fun and they forgot about footy. They were inept against a well coached Hawks by the Master Coach Clarkson and he and his players came to town with a purpose.
Every man and their dog in Adelaide wanted to tell you why 2018 was only a blip on the radar and that the Crows would march back into the AFL Grand Final in 2019. Based on Round 1, it seems some of the players believed it, they lacked fight and hunger and now have Sydney away and Geelong the next two games”.
Tackle count the key stat
From the opening bounce Adelaide looked flustered, under pressure and folded up badly. Don’t let the contested possession numbers fool you either, Adelaide won this count by 18 but the real number to look at is the tackles. Hawthorn had 16 more tackles overall but the heat they applied in the forward 50 was chalk and cheese with Hawthorn having 19 inside 50 tackles to the Crows 7.
Senior Adelaide players regularly made poor choices with disposal mainly because they had no time-the pressure from Hawthorn was immense-and Adelaide didnt handle it.
They have approached pre season to bring “the fun” back to footy-well perhaps they have done that I’m not sure -but if they have its at the expense of a hard edge.
Crows players do not have the hard edge
Adelaide are missing a hard edge with Rory Sloane about the only player you can point to who has that innate drive to compete like no other-Adelaide really seem to lack Competitors.
Its important to understand this because being a competitor requires turning the flow of the game your way when its not going your way. This is not something Adelaide has a very good record at doing in fact conceding a big run of goals has been in their DNA for sometime.
Make no mistake, when Adelaide get it on their terms they are as potent as any side in the competition especially in Adelaide but when its not on their terms it all seems too hard and their ability to be resilient and handle the heat and turn the tide in their favour simply isn’t evident often enough.
It does pain us to say this as this group has dealt with so much off field adversity in the last few years and to say they are not resilient is not accurate in it may well be the opposite. But off field resilience needs to transfer to on field and they need to generate this on game day otherwise it will be all too little too late again.
