Our thirteenth team we analyse for the AFL tips and betting in the AFL 2019 season is the Adelaide Crows.
Off Field Drama Aplenty
Without doubt the club that fell with the biggest thud in AFL season 2018 was the Adelaide Crows. From finishing top of the AFL table in 2017 and playing off in a Grand Final the Crows crashed down to 12thon the AFL table amid off field controversy about a divisive pre season camp that seemed to rip the heart and soul out of a club that only months earlier was the benchmark of the AFL competition.
The Adelaide Crows made a monumental error with the training camp and it was a total overreaction to underperforming on the biggest day of the year that was AFL Grand Final day 2017. Quite simply they were beaten by a cracking side and instead of tweaking a few things for improvement the club went overboard in breaking down and trying to rebuild a playing group mentally.
It backfired and in the process the club lost the trust and respect of the players creating great divisions on and off the ground which inevitably produced the shocking year of 2018.
Can the Crows Repair for 2019
The big question is clearly going to be has the Crows managed to rebuild the trust between itself and the playing group. Our feeling says the answer is no, as trust is something that generally takes a long time to build and something that is lost very quickly.
Add to this the new “double captaincy” it points to an attempt to appease two separate groups (those who want Walker as Captain and those that want Sloane). It is a divisive appointment that illustrates either one of two things:
1-The Club believe that Walker is not up to the captaincy and needs to spread the load
2- The club want Sloane as the captain but are unwilling to remove the man who was AFL Captain of the Year only two years ago. Neither of these 2 elements is great.
Talent Aplenty and Talent alone can lead to a Bounce
Mitch McGovern was the biggest loss for Adelaide in the off season however the return of Brad Crouch is a big plus despite a setback in pre season 2019 and the ability for him to play high level football again week in week out is very questionable but he has sup talent.
Brodie Smith is a big inclusion off his ACL recovery and can provide much needed penetration and bounce off half back.
The big question for Adelaide is not do they have the talent as they have a heap of it but can the talent produce consistently in the 2017 mould. We believe the first month of football is as crucial if not more to Adelaide’s chances of a good season than any other club. They don’t know themselves what they are going to produce so they as much as anyone have big queries on where they stand and whether they can recover from the damage done.
Nowhere is as certain as getting that answer from results if Adelaide start poorly. Champion Data states the Crows have a tough first month but we believe they hav 4 winnable games in Hawthorn (Adel oval) Syd (SCG) Geelong (Adel Oval) Nth Melb (Marvel)).
2-2 or less and the writing is on the wall for another terrible year if however they can string together 3-1 or better the draw will open up for them as their finishing position last year accounts for an easier run at things.
We feel Adelaide will improve but we are not as certain they will “bounce” straight back into contention as many do as they have much damage to undo however the first month will tell the tale! Talent aplenty but question on culture!
