AFL tips and betting at iTipsports features all 18 teams in our FREE AFL Season Bonus Preview that will outline their fortunes for 2019 from our expert AFL tips analysis and introduces our method of AFL betting analysis the HBM Human Behaviour Model.

Our fourteenth team we analyse for the AFL tips and betting in the AFL 2019 season is Collingwood.

A Hellova” 2018 Season

What a season it was for Collingwood in AFL tips and betting 2018 as everything Coach Nathan Buckley touched turned to gold. Well almost everything and if it weren’t for a miraculous last minute Dom Sheed goal the Pies would be AFL Premiers.

But not to be and as Eddie McGuire said at the after match function “as it turns out, we were in front for 95 per cent of the game and behind for five per cent. The bottom line is, we’re behind (for) eternity from here.” You cannot get back lost opportunities and this will be a driving force for the Pies in AFL 2019.

Buckley is the Man

Collingwood conducted a full review of the club post 2017 before anointing Nathan Buckley as the man to take them forward. The review produced great fruit and most notably a united team as a club that was one in all in at all levels, a chemistry of which is the precursor to success.

Can this same chemistry carry through to AFL season 2019 after falling so desperately short on Grand Final Day? This will be the balance for Buckley as he will need to convince the playing group they are on the right path and that the game plan will stack up again.

Whilst it may seem obvious to most that a five point loss in a Grand Final is “on the right path” sometimes when players give everything they have and still come up short they question what else they have to do to win. Buckley will need to produce something in this space for the players to grab onto and believe in as if he dishes up we were unlucky and we need to do more of the same he may lose the confidence of the group.

at the same time he doesn’t want to “overreact” like the Crows did with a big balancing act.

Strong Player List but a Tougher 2019 year

We see it being a lot tougher year for the Magpies as they have the toughest fixture on paper according to Champion Data and they will need a lot of the players who had “career best” years to go and do that again, not always an easy ask.

Brodie Grundy stamped himself as the All Australian ruckmen in a stunning season, the Pies forward line spread the load with De Goey and Hoskin Elliot 40+ goals each and Josh Thomas and Jaidyn Stephenson with 38 goals each, and the mids Pendlebury, Adams, Sidebottom and Treloar really got it done at a high level all year. This is a super talented side that is for sure.

Nathan Buckley is also coming off a career best year and took the AFL coach of the year award so yet another member of the Collinwood unit that needs to reproduce a career best year after a number of years in the doldrums.

No doubt on their day the Pies can be the best side in the AFL competition but they are going to be tested at such a high level all year this year that their ability to dish up the topline efforts required week in week out with the draw they have is a big ask.

Collingwood played finals for the first time since 2013 last year and almost took the whole thing. While we don’t see them missing the top 8 and we see a top four spot beckoning a step up for Collingwood is a AFL premiership but we see a step back before the next leg up.
