Our fifteenth team we analyse for the AFL tips and betting in the AFL 2019 season is West Coast

What a 2018 Year of Success

The AFL premiership won by the West Coast Eagles will have to go down in the annals of history as one of the great AFL wins of all time.

The Eagles overcame heavy injury adversity (Nic Natanui, Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Mark lecras) suspension and off field controversy (Andrew Gaff punch) to build a club that was full of care for each other and all strongly aligned to one purpose, a club that felt like everyone had each others back. This total club buy in produced a level of togetherness that took them all the way to an AFL Grand Final win.

The big question will be can this feeling continue given the ultimate prize has been achieved. We believe it can because despite being premiership players there is a sense that members of the squad still don’t feel like they are a guaranteed starters for round 1 this year. Even the Premiership star Dom Sheed who kicked the winning goal said “I have to be better, I only played 18 of 25 games last year I am no garauntee to be picked there are quality players knocking on the door and returning from injury”. This is a brilliant mind set that we like.

We get the feeling there is minimal complacency amongst this group which is a massive plus when needing to go back to back.

Recent Achilles Heel for the Eagles

The achilles heel for the Eagles in recent years has been winning away in particular at the MCG. They put that to bed in 2018 winning the flag and three games in total at the MCG and winning eight matches interstate. This will be hard to replicate but is a must for another tilt at AFL Premiership glory.

Player movement

The off season saw the West Coast really hold their side together well with Andrew Gaff re-signed, Jeremy McGovern had already pre committed and the most notable departures are Mark Le Cras (retired) and Scott Lycett (Port Adelaide) but with the likely return of Nic Natanui prior to mid year and the ability to bring Andrew Gaff into the fold (missing the last 6 games of year suspended) along with the natural improvement of small forwards Liam Ryan and Willie Rioli with a decent run with injuries the eagles look to have a decent crack of back to back flags.

Coach Simpson is the Man

What Adam Simpson was able to achieve last year against adversity should be lauded a lot more than it has as they totally flew under the radar. Even sitting 10-1 no one was talking about them in flag conversations. Their dismantling of Melbourne in the Preliminary Final was one of the most commanding performances in recent years.

West Coast are also a team that has unbelievable balance along with belief in both the height and speed game. They successfully mix three and at times four big tall forwards and two ruckmen in a day and age when most other sides were trying the “Richmond” small fleeting forward. The lesson to learn here, make the best of what you have not what you think you have to have.

So What’s the Biggest Danger

The biggest danger when it comes to AFL premiership hangovers are complacency or players being happy with themselves and with the competition for spots as strong as it is at Eagles land we don’t see this being an issue for the defending premiers. Despite them encountering a tougher draw this year we believe there is another level the Eagles can go to. Another flag is not out of the equation but history is not with them and it will be tough to achieve!
