The JJ Atkins Stakes is a Group 1 race for 2 year olds over 1600m. This is a race that can really be a good kick start for a horses career and was won last year by The Autumn Sun. Now that kicked started some career albeit short!

Many of the better two year olds have concluded their preparations and are in the paddock. An opportunity is here for a horse who is a slower maturer to step out over a bit of ground and show their talent. This is also another reason why the race does have its fair share of local training success. They are able to “baby” their 2 year old a bit more and take their time without needing the travel education.

The Sires Produce – best lead in race

Generally the best lead in race is the Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) run two weeks before at Doomben. There have been 8 horses do the Sires/Atkins double in the last 25 years. It is worth doing appropriate study on this event post race as well because if you can identify the horses with the ability and breeding to stay you can earmark some horses going forward into their 3YO years who will most likely run very well in the Guineas and Derby as part of the Melbourne Racing Tips Spring Carnival.

Brisbane Racing Tips – Group 2 2400m Brisbane Cup

The Brisbane Cup is a Group 2 race run over 2400m and is a Quality Handicap. The Brisbane Cup is one of the oldest races on the Australian calendar as part of the Brisbane Racing Tips Winter Carnival. It was first run just 5 years after the first Melbourne Cup in1866.

The race had many varying distances in its infancy running anywhere from 2800 to 3600m. It was decided that 3200m would be the journey and this remained the case from 1884-2006 when the race was downgraded to Group 2 status and reduced to 2400m.

N.Z. stayers the ones to watch in Brisbane Cup Tips

The race was not run for 4 years over the 2nd World War as the Army occupied Eagle Farm racecourse. 2015 saw the race run at Doomben whilst the track grade was underway. However it returned in the 2016/17 racing season to Eagle Farm. The New Zealand stayers do have a good record in this race and are chasing three in a row after Chocante and Benzini have won the last 2 races.

Dane Ripper Stakes – Brisbane Racing Tips Group 2 1400m

The Dane Ripper Stakes is a Group 2 race for Fillies and Mares run over 1400m at Eagle Farm over the Brisbane Racing Tips Winter Carnival. Initially a quality handicap this race was made a set weights and penalties in 2006 and has been a Group 2 race since 2010. Dane Ripper was a fabulous mare trained by the late great Bart Cummings. Bart dominated the 1997 Brisbane Racing Tips Winter Carnival winning the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap and the Group 1 Winter Stakes.

Girls only Gentlemen!

It is one of few opportunities at Group 1 level for the girls at this distance range. The race presents a significant opportunity for the mares to gain much valued top line “black type” for the breeding barn.
