This was in their rising 3 year old year and went on to be stars of the Australian Turf. However with horses at that level these days being targeted to produce stunning sire resume’s, the really topline horses are generally having a spell. They are preparing for a tilt of success in the Melbourne Racing Tips Spring Carnival. Recent times has seen Freemason (2000) the only Queensland Derby winner to go on win at Group 1 level.

The Key lead up races of the Queensland Derby

Generally the key lead up races in recent times have been been the Grand Prix (run 2 weeks earlier at Doomben 2200m). The other is the Queensland Oaks run the week before but only two Derby winners in the last 18 years have followed these two paths.

The race can attract horses who have run in the Adelaide Derby as well. There is a month between the South Australian Derby and the Queensland Derby. Connections who’s horse ran well in the South Australian Derby may make the trip north for their last 3 year old taste of glory.

Barrier draw is crucial

Barrier draws are crucial as there is not an extended run to the first turn. History clearly shows wide gates are a disadvantage. Over the last 30 years the winner has drawn gate 5 or closer to the rail, so a big watch on this scenario.
