The irony of this is that it was the Gold Coast Suns who’s jumper was the “Chinese” red and yellow. This left Port Adelaide far from impressed but with a bigger picture at play Port Adelaide sucked it up. They located a suitable stadium and conducted the required renovations and the dream was realised in 2017 at Jiangwan Stadium, Shanghai.

Suns out and Saints in

The deal only lasted two years with the Suns and that’s probably best for the whole concept. The Suns were atrocious on both occasions losing by 72 Points in 2017 and 40 points last year. The Saints will play Port Adelaide for points this year in China after a deal between the Victorian and Federal governments along with the AFL has been reached. The match will signify the end of the “Festival of Australia”, a 10 day showcase of the Australian Culture around the China provinces.

Crucial game for both sides, an “8 point game”

Its also a crucial game in the context of the season for both clubs, both with 5 wins for the year and sitting percentage out of the 8. It’s the classic “8 point game” where the winner can put a gap between themselves and the other.

Port Adelaide have been starting terribly, but one big advantage they should have over the Saints is this is their third trip to China. They have a structured process by which they prepare for this game which includes flying in the teams meals, and they wont be “starry eyed” at the big new world.

Saints on “holiday” or there to win?

It is very possible on their maiden trip the Saints may feel like they are in somewhat a holiday mode, as it’s the last game as well before the break. Saint Kilda snapped a four game losing streak last week. However they can’t rest there and need to begin rebuilding confidence by putting a couple of wins together. One thing is for sure they are going to have to play better than they did against the lowly Blues last week. Failure to do this could see a thrashing number 3 in China AFL.
