Our third team we analyse for the AFL tips and bettingin the AFL 2019 season is the St Kilda.

Season 2018 was nothing short of a disaster for the St Kilda footy club after two solid seasons (missing finals by 1 game in 2017) the Saints were quite public with the belief they would push into the finals and challenge strongly in September.

Wrong…they were disgraceful in so many ways winning only four games for the year and many players looking a mere shadow of their former selves, the Coach was under immense pressure but survived an all consuming footy review to coach in 2019.

AFL 2019 – Off Field Big Changes!

The Saints are back at Moorabin and their new president Andrew Bassat (co founder of SEEK) believes they have been able to finally re-establish their soul and create the culture and off field structures in place to give themselves the best chance of on field success.

In the off season the Saints have added some real top line talent to their coaching structure recruiting Brett Ratten and Brendon Lade giving an indication the footy review showed holes in their footy program. The Saints skills were deplorable in all parts of the ground but most particularly in front of goal their inaccuracy was terrible.

Dan Hannabery was the big time recruit in the off season he is a much needed asset not only in the midfield but can bring the work ethic that is required to succeed at the highest level. Something it appears many of the Saints could learn from. Also he can bring some leadership to a side that is lacking impact leaders and is misguided in the leadership department since the loss of its long serving skipper Nick Riewoldt

The Saints have also added Billy Slater (former NRL Melbourne Storm) to help out in the leadership/culture department.

Coach and Player group disconnect

From the outside looking in it really looks like Richardson has lost the playing group.  To us they certainly don’t seem to want work the way he needs them to work. He also made some very bizarre selection decisions especially around some senior players (David Armitage in particular) that just didn’t smell right however the club have conducted a full review and feel Richardson is the man for the job. Maybe it was just a bad year, it can happen!

We don’t think there is much doubt that despite the searching footy review Alan Richardson is the Coach in the AFL under the most pressure heading into season 2019 despite having a contract until the end of 2020. If they dish up more of what they did in 2018 they wont be able to show him the door quick enough. We also need to see a game style that is clear how they play and what they stand for! Over to you Richo…!
