AFL 2019 – A Slide for the North Melbourne Kanga…Lose

Our third team we analyse for the AFL tips and betting in the AFL 2019 season is the North Melbourne Kangaroos.

We expect a slide in the North Melbourne footy club 2019 season and this may be at odds with general consensus given their very solid year in 2018. After getting rid of their elderly stars and on the back of some heavy summer recruiting, we believe North Melbourne have played “above themselves” for far too long and a slide is expected.

Coach Scott a long Tenure

Brad Scott has some spell over North Melbourne, he is the third highest ranked coach in terms of AFL/VFL games coached without reaching a Grand Final and he is also the only one to do it at one club. He does just enough or a bit better in his contract years and the club (probably scared of who they are going to get) continue to get suckered in and offer him another deal. He played it beautifully when the Suns job was vacant and yet again the hierarchy fell for it and offered another extended deal.

To their credit North Melbourne rallied behind their coach and nearly played off in finals in 2018 (9th) when most people had them pegged as a bottom four side. When you add to that the off season recruiting of Jared Polec, Dom Tyson, Aaron Hall and Jasper Pittard along with drafting one of the best talents in Tarryn Thomas then it should be onwards and upwards.

We are not so sure, the whole ethos of the North Melbourne has been built on the back of blue collar “shinbone spirit”. This is the tough uncompromising rugged footballer, someone who has had significant adversity and builds their game around contested ball.

Polec Pay Day

With the exception of Wayne Carey there has not been a time at the North Melbourne where one player is paid so much money and there has never been a player paid so much money versus his perceived ability (Jared Polec) at the North.

This alone may be testing time for many at the club who believe they should be paid more or even those who have been paid “unders” for many years as North could not afford to pay the Salary Cap. How this dynamic plays out will be interesting as will how leadership handle the influx of experienced players from other clubs.

That said, these off season recruits may supply some much needed outside run and carry along with some polish at Marvel Stadium we believe they may bring other baggage that is not as obvious to the outside world and in our view will create instability among the group in 2019.
