AFL Finals 2019 – the race is on

AFL Finals race 2019 – the teams on the edge review of Round 21

The AFL Finals 2019 top 8 will be finalised in the next fortnight as we have a look at the performances of some of the sides fighting for finals positions from last wekeends Round 21 AFL Betting Tips games.

The GWS totally failed to show up in the AFL Betting Tips Friday night game in Canberra last week. They were held to their lowest score of the year against Hawthorn Hawks who had stiched the Giants up at the MCG earlier in the year. This loss brings Coach Leon Cameron’s tenure under the microscope, particularly if they fail yet again in another finals campaign. The Giants do have a heap of injuries admittedly but this, whilst fact, does not excuse last weeks performance. The Giants failed to score a goal after half time simply not good enough for a side who was attempting to stay in the fight for an AFL Top 4 spot. A “straight sets” exit would see GWS looking for a new coach.

Hawthorn in the meantime had a spectacular win and are a very rough $17 chance to make the top 8. The Hawks are on the rise for 2020 no matter what happens this year.

Sorry but we can’t help ourselves in making Ports rise all about Ken Hinkley such is the upbeat demeanour of the Port Coach. Is Port Adelaide announcing themselves as AFL Finals contenders? Port supporters are prepared to say yes on the back of recent games. But we have seen this soooooooo many times before.

Coach Ken Hinkley has made big selection calls in recent weeks, including initially leaving co captain Ollie Wines out of the 22 to play Sydney. He ended up being a late replacement but Hinkley had sent his message to the group already!

Port Adelaide have done this before, given us a sniff only to turn it up the next week. It is the first time since Round 6 they have won back to back games and they have pushed into the AFL Top 8. Are they back?? We have heard this all before and hey have a game against a North side coming off a embarrassing loss scoring only the single goal at Geelong.

Whilst the Western Bulldogs were simply spectacular in AFL Saturday nigh clash, the real story here is Essendon FC. It had to be seen to be believed in our AFL Betting Tips Saturday night clash between Essendon and Bulldogs.

21 unanswered goals
Lets set the scene shall we as Essendon as Essendon scored the opening goal in the first 20 seconds of the game. The Western Bulldogs then piled on 21 unanswered goals from the 9 minute mark of the opening quarter to the 18 minute mark of the final quarter. They totally mauled Essendon at Marvel Stadium.

Essendon Football Club – second worst goals against in AFL history
It was the second worst run of unanswered goals in the history of the game sitting only behind Fremantle who conceded 23 goals in a row against Geelong last year. It just simply is difficult to believe that Essendon can be this bad. We have always talked about the Essendon downhill skiing one way offensive high octane football. But their defensive ability has always been questioned. It had improved of late but was shocking Saturday night. The Bulldogs just counterpunched all night and Essendon had next to no defensive action. Essendon totally lacked any desire/structure to stop the onslaught.

Essendon and Worsfold…where to now
Essendon are still a game clear inside the AFL Top 8 but hopes are fading fast. When a team gives no effort like that the coaches head comes into question. It is not the first time Worsfold has been under pressure this year. Club great and media identity Matthew Lloyd had Worsfold gone at round 1. Whilst we thin round one is a bit rough, there must be serious questions over Worsfold’s tenure.

He did handle it manfully at the post game press conference. Sometimes however, the anger and pressure builds as the week goes on after a loss like that. Essendon play Fremantle away and then a massive one against Collingwood to make the AFL Final 8. Lets see how they respond but rest assured this was an Essendon disaster.

The Bulldogs have a must win game against the Giants next week and it could come down to their AFL Betting Tips final round game against Adelaide as to whether they can make the AFL Finals! The Bulldogs have put themselves only percentage out of the AFL top 8 with that win making up a staggering 7% in that game alone.

Adelaide was brave looking some hope last week versus West Coast in Perth until the final couple of minutes only going down by 10 points. They have unearthed a key forward with Darcy Fogarty kicking 5 goals straight and you have to ask why he hasn’t played earlier? That loss kept Adelaide locked out of the AFL Top 8 after Port Adelaide replaced them on Saturday and with a heavy head knock to their co captain Rory Sloane this does not help their position. They have a do or die game at home versus Collingwood this weekend.
