AFL BETTING TIPS – SIR DOUG NICHOLLS ROUND (RD 10 AND 11)
This is the 13th season the AFL has dedicated a round (formerly Indigenous Round) to celebrate the Culture and Contribution to AFL Football of the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders. This AFL Betting Tips season 2019 will see the round and celebration spread officially over two weeks. This will allow for the first time all teams to celebrate at least one game on their home ground in the famous redesigned jumpers.
Of course the big game of the round is the Richmond v Essendon “Dream Time at the G”. This will be our AFL Betting Tips game of the Round and no greater celebration is there of the Indigenous impact on AFL than this game. What a truly superb celebration of Indigenous culture and in front of 80,000 plus supporters.
Four years ago the AFL renamed the round Sir Doug Nicholls round. Sir Doug Nicholls played footy for Fitzroy in the VFL before dedicating his life to reconciliation. he became a pastor and was one of the true pioneers in the reconciliation process. Doug Nicholls became the first Aboriginal Torres straight islander to be knighted, eventually going on to hold the position of Governor in South Australia.
This years round will pay particular tribute to former Essendon great Michael Long becoming only the second person celebrated in the dedicated round. The first was Graham “Polly” Farmer last year. Long is a two time Premiership player with the Essendon Bombers who became the first Aboriginal/Torres Straight Islander to Captain an AFL club. Post career he has become a real leader becoming a strong advocate for reconciliation and has been a strong voice for the power of education. He continues to make a stand to close the gap between indigenous and non indigenous Australia.
