Speak to some of the greats of the AFL game and they will tell you losing Preliminary Finals in a bad way is akin to losing a Grand Final. It is something that stays with you and is emotionally very hard to get rid of the memory and move on.
AFL Prelim Finals embarrassments…where to from here
History is littered with teams who have been embarrassed in AFL Preliminary Finals and history is not necessarily kind to them. Generally tells us it goes one of two ways, the team implodes the next season and the stench can hang around for few years or the side steels themselves and it bonds them in almost an unbreakable way where they will not ever let each other down like that again. Generally there is no in between and this is the question that will be answered as 2019 unfolds for the Demons and their long suffering fans.
Much to like about the Demons in 2018
There was so much to like about Melbourne last year, particularly the back half and this was on the back of the disappointment of missing the AFL finals by percentage only in 2017. In the run home Melbourne beat the Eagles (premiers) in Perth and a strong win over the GWS before very strong finals wins against Geelong (who had beaten Demons twice by less than a kick) and then sending the Hawks packing.
However the embarrassment of being goal less in a Preliminary Final to half time and really with the game being over only ten minutes into the first term this is something that can burn very deep.
How will Coach Goodwin respond
Simon Goodwin and how he handles these tricky waters will go a long way to determining if the Demons contend or wilt. Goodwin has consistently spoken about “being on and enjoying a journey to consistent high performance”. Well his mettle will be well and truly tested as will the trust between he and his playing group. He has to walk the fine line between not getting too angry with a disgraceful exit in 2018 but at the same time ensuring the playing group don’t float through thinking the next step will naturally happen as it doesn’t.
Tom McDonald was one of the great revelations for the Demons, the defender turned key forward was dominant in front of the sticks and the Demons have really shored up their defence getting Steven May and Kade Kolodjasni from the Suns. When you throw in their young talented mids Clayton Oliver Christian Petracca and Bailey Fristch along with the old campaigners of Gawn, Jones and Viney, Melbourne have everything they need to play off in the AFL Grand Final 2019.
If Melbourne are able to get to the AFL Grand Final and do it one thing is for sure the Demons will deserve it playing the last two premiers twice in 2019 (Richmond and West Coast) and last years AFL Runners Up Colingwood twice as well.
It is in the Demons court now they have assembled the talent, they have the ingredients to do what it takes the question is will they.
