Our seventeenth team we analyse for the AFL tips and betting in the AFL 2019 season is Essendon.

Can Worsfold become The Messiah

Is John Worsfold about to become “The Messiah” they thought he would be and the man to lead Essendon out of one of the darkest holes in AFL history and into the light of AFL premiership glory. AFL season 2019 could very well answer that question.

“Whoosha” has in a short space of time appears to have built a bond and level of trust with a playing group that couldn’t have been blamed if they never trusted anyone at Essendon again. Season 2018 began disastrously losing 6 of their first 8 games and not only did Worslfold staunchly defend his players he also took a level of blame himself and after a short mid season review his right hand man Mark Neeld was sacked. The turnaround was something out of a fairy tale as they won 10 of their last 14 games to become the form side of the competition but due to the early season form they failed to make the AFL finals.

Second Half 2018 and Trade deal says the Bombers are Back

Essendon sent a message to the AFL competition, we are back and we are back in a big way. They were hard nosed in the off season as well securing one of the great trades in the last 15 minutes before the AFL Trade deadline getting star midfielder Dylan Shiel from the GWS. What an x-factor he is going to be to throw into the midfield mix with his former teammate Devon Smith, Zach Merrett, David Zaharakis and the skipper Dyson Heppell.

Jake Stringer came to Essendon last year and was serviceable (30 goals) and depending on how Joe Daniher comes back (out since Rd 7 2018) they could form a really dangerous forward combo and throw in Orazzio and they look exciting.

Favourable AFL Draw

There is a lot of a bonus in Essendon’s draw as well in that they only face one top four side twice (Collingwood) giving them a real opportunity to push hard into the AFL top four.

The danger is that on the strength of what they did in the second half of the year is that the players think its just going to happen from natural improvement. Big mistake as they need to bring attitude and focus to every session and you suspect with a premiership coach at the helm he won’t fall for the obvious.

Rip, Shit and Bust Football but now Balanced with Defense

Essendon have always had a pretty solid defensive unit as far as personnel are concerned with perhaps not utilising it at its best and playing what we describe as ‘Rip, Shit and Bust Football. This was mainly due to one way running from the midfield creating a team of “downhill skiers” and this was addressed in the seoncd half of 2018. Further improvement on the defensive aspect of the Essendon midfield can see them challenge top four and look to the AFL Grand Final.
