AFL Preview 2019 – Brisbane Lions

The Roar looks back in the Brisbane Lions

Our eighth team we analyse for the AFL tips and betting in the AFL 2019 season is Brisbane.

This will play out in season 2019 but we have a feeling the Lions are a very good chance to continue marching up the ladder.

Chris Fagan has been in charge for two years now in 2017 the Lions finished bottom with 5 wins and 15thin 2018 with still just the 5 wins. However the Lions had another 5 games that they lost by less than a kick so quite easily they could’ve had another 5 wins.

Is the Gabbatoir back!

The impressive thing was the way the Lions went about their footy, it was hard and tough but it was also pacy at times and we get the feeling that Gabba may start resembling the “Gabbtoir” of the early 2000’s when teams dreaded the trip north. The Brisbane Lions were drastically able to narrow the gap between their best and worst performances with really only one bad blowout all year (against defending premier at the time Richmond loss 93 pts). It is now there for them to take the next step and win these close games.

The off season saw Brisbane lose their former captain Dayne Beams who found his way back home to Collingwood but they pulled off a great manoeuvre by enticing ball magnet Lachie Neal to join them from the Dockers and we feel this is a trade where the Lions won’t lose anything.

Brisbane have been able to sure up their spine as well with the recruitment of former Bulldog centre half back Marcus Adams who along with Harris Andrews and with the direction of Luke Hodge they really have a solid defence when you add in the silk of Daniel Rich and Alex Witherden (2nd year) they can get some good bounce out of defence.

The Number 1 Draft Pick Cameron Rayner showed some exciting glimpses last year and we look forward to seeing more from him.

Fagan and Player Chemistry

Chris Fagan is building a very nice chemistry through a young group that is excited by the challenge to get better and grow together and what’s more it looks like they are given some freedom to have some fun while doing it-they are allowed to play with their natural flair which is a very important aspect from a players perspective and one that all to often gets coached out of them at this level.

The danger is that the Lions think that “it will just happen”, in other words rely on natural improvement and that will be enough to rise up the ladder. They need to bring everything and more to every session with the intent and purpose to get better and without this it will just be another year of unfulfilled talent.

We believe the coach is to cagey to allow this to occur so we are tipping a significant rise for the Brisbane Lions.
