7 for Glenn Boss as it’s a Brutal win in Doncaster
Glen Boss chalked up his seventh Sydney Racing tips Doncaster Handicap win at Randwick racecourse Saturday with a daring but brilliant ride on Brutal who’s chances looked diminished from gate 21. Brutal had 49.5 kg for the 1600m Doncaster Handicap and not many big time jockeys can ride that weight. It took a phone call from Team Hawkes and $8,000 to entice Glen Boss over for the ride.
Boss has been riding in Singapore for the last few years as for whatever reason the opportunities dried up a bit in Australia. Michael Hawkes put the call in to Boss who shed the weight with $8,000 in hand to take the 3 year old Brutal ride.
It was a gun ride by Boss who sent the 3 year old forward in an aggressive move but within 400m he was up outside the leader and backing the speed off, it was clear Boss was committed to a plan and whilst the other jockeys were “watching and waiting” Boss was doing, and without excess energy he was in the prime spot with the lightweight.
Brutal is now the equal favourite for the Group 1 Brisbane Racing tips Stradbroke Handicap in Queensland on June 8.
Hong Kong bounce for Santa Ana Lane
“Keep him fresh, big gaps between runs and he just keeps stepping up to the mark” and these were the words from Anthony Freedman claiming he has finally figured his star horse Santa Anna Lane out after he went to a new level destroying his rivals in the Group 1 Sydney Racing tips T.J. Stakes at Randwick Saturday.
The way he put away a star studded opposition had to really be seen to be believed and Anthony Freedman now looks set to take his star to Hong Kong for the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m April 28th) and all going well a trip to Royal Ascot in June is not out of the equation.
10 Group 1 winners, what a record
Anthony Freedman has meticulously gone about his work with Santa Ana Lane, the part of his training that stands him apart from so many others is simply his strike rate at Group 1 Level. In Sydney Racing tips The Championships Saturday at Randwick racecourse, Santa Anna Lane made it his tenth group 1 winner from just 37 starters at almost a one in three strike rate which is simply brilliant.
The world await’s for Freedman and if Saturdays effort is anything to go by Santa Anna lane will fly the Australian flag very proudly at Hong Kong and or Royal Ascot.
Front running brilliant best as Angel takes out the Derby
Where was The Autumn Sun when you need the brilliant 3 year old? What a shame he did not run in the Sydney Racing tips Australian Derby let alone tackle Winx in Saturdays Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
We spoke last week about Corey Brown being one of the best “on pace” jockeys in the world, his sense of pace in front is a big advantage to him versus his contemporaries and he pulled the ace out of the back again in the Australian Derby.
For the third year in a row the winner of the Tulloch Stakes has gone on to back up the week later and win the Australian Derby, it was Jon Snow in 2017, Levendi last year and Angel of Truth following the recipe for success again this season.
One of the key elements to the Australian Derby at Randwick racecourse is there is always a question mark on whether the horses can truly “stay” as many are going to this distance range the first time. What this can lead to is jockeys trying to “save” their horses energy throughout the run to ensure there is some there at the finish and Brown used this to his absolute advantage.
Straight to the lead and that’s all she wrote in the Derby!
Corey Brown took Angel of Truth straight to the lead and he ensured just enough tempo to make sure no one took him on but not to much to jeopardise the horses chances, by the 1000m he was getting away with “blue murder” in the lead and Gwenda Markwell said post race “When I saw him leading with his ears pricked at the 1000m I thought he would take a lot of running down”. Brown booted strongly for home from the 400m the horse showed the nice turn of foot and it was a great win. No questin people will take all the more notice of the Tulloch Stakes winner into the Australian Derby and a big Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival beckons for Angel of Truth.
Cummings anoints Microphone as Australia’s best 2 year old
With five runners in the Sydney Racing tips Golden Slipper and going on to quinella the richest 2yo race in the world if James Cummings talks 2 year olds, you listen.
After Microphone’s impressive win in the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes at Randwick as part of the Sydney Racing tips The Championships, Cummings officially claimed “Microphone is the best 2 year old in Australia” and its hard to argue with a man who has pretty much dominated the 2yo races this season.
Bowman had Microphone tucked in behind the pace having a sweet run, he got a nice run in the straight and powered away for a most strong and impressive victory. Microphone ran 2ndto Kiamichi in the Golden Slipper with Cummings revealing the horse was “flat” after the run and gave real credit to his stable for giving Microphone an easy time this proved a winning move.
Cummings went on to describe why he felt this was the best horse of the 2 year old season “I think his longevity in this campaign (started in January) his strength his class his courage all points to him being the best 2YO in the country this season”
In our Sydney Racing tips our focus now goes to the third leg of the Triple Crown awaits next week in the Champagne Stakes (1600m 2yo) in a fortnights time and Cummings wanting to take a wait and see approach before committing to the race at this stage the horse is not entered.
