THE DONCASTER MILE – EVERY HORSE RATED

Whilst Melbourne have attempted to hijack The Doncaster handicap by running The All Star Mile there is no doubt that in the short to medium term The Sydney Racing Tips Doncaster Handicap holds pride of place as the premier mile race in the country.

The Doncaster is a race steeped in tradition first run in 1866 to an unbelievable field of 30 horses!! It has been won by many champions over the years paying testament to its underlying premise of being clearly the best mile race in the country. Former winners include Winx, Sunline, Grand Armee, Super Impose, Tobin Bronze and Gunsynd to name a few.

The Doncaster tends to be an excellent Sydney Racing tips betting race for two reasons that are:

  1. It is a handicap meaning that “in theory” all horses are on a level playing field
  2. The Start, this is one of the best starts in Australian racing it allows a long run of 600m to the first turn and what this does is generally gives every horse a chance to find a nice position meaning the barrier draw becomes less of an influence.

THE T.J. SMITH STAKES

The Sydney Racing tips T.J. Smith Stakes has very quickly established itself as the feature sprint race of the Sydney Racing tips Auntumn Carnival and it’s a meteoric rise for a race that started as a simple listed event in 1997 (originally called the “Endeavour” Stakes won by the great Mahogany). The very next year it was quickly elevated to a group 3 in 1999 it was renamed the T.J. Smith Stakes and by 2005 it was a Group 1 a true sign that the Australian racing fraternity really embraced supporting the memory of the legendary trainer in Australian racing

AUSTRALIAN DERBY

Formerly known as the AJC Derby its fair to say that the Sydney Racing tips Australian Derby has established itself as the premier 3 year old staying race in the country, whilst the Victorian Derby is perhaps thought of as “blue ribband” the Australian Derby has a much more seasoned mature 3 year old competes which means they generally can go on and have successful careers.

And why not with the likes of Strawberry Road, Bonecruser, Mahogany, Octagonal, Phar Lap, Tulloch and Dulcify… the list goes on all going on to have successful careers.

Because of the positioning of the race it doesn’t attract a lot of fillies as they would have to back up after the Vinery Stakes and they generally run the week after in the Australian Oaks.

Entry to this race is in order of stake money earned this means its generally winners that are competing making for a great betting event with an even spread of roughies and favourites winning over the last 35 years also the punter weighs up whether the horse is a “stayer” always an unkown until they actually do it.

This is a very “hot” start and barriers are very important there is only a 200m run to the first turn and those drawn wide risk doing extra work in the run. Here is the current market for the running of the 2019 Australian Derby

THE SIRES PRODUCE 2YO CLASSIC

This is a 1400m Group 1 race for the 2 year olds and represents the “second leg” of the prestigious “Triple Crown” the first leg of which is the Golden Slipper and the last leg is the Champagne Stakes.

Generally the path to the Sydney Racing tips Sires Produce is through the Golden Slipper although success can certainly be had by missing that and targeting the longer 1400m trip as the equal fav Castelvecchio is attempting to do this year.

It can be a good formula to follow Gai Waterhouse in this race as we have mentioned before she knows how to train a tough 2 year old’s and she has won the race an amazing seven times in the last 18 years. Identifying a horse on “the up” is extremely important here as a majority come through the slipper that was their “grand final” and this at times can be an “afterthought” here is the market for this years big race

Group 1 races on the first day of The Championships:

THE DONCASTER MILE
T.J SMITH STAKES
AUSTRALIAN DERBY
SIRES PRODUCE STAKES…and 6 other big races at Randwick.
