“He just had a $1.5 Million canter” was James Cummings summing up the devastating win of Avilius in the Group 1 Sydney Racing Tancred Stakes. We had Avilius as our predicted Autumn Stable Star well before the Autumn Racing Carnival started and so it turns out minus the Australian Cup.
He was a short priced favourite $1.60 fav as a Best Bet and form lines looked a class above the rest of the field, but the ease at which he put the opposition away was stunning to watch. We had a nice Sydney Racing tips quinella with Big Duke as runner up.
Avilius loves the Sydney way of going and remains unbeaten winning all six starts and Saturday we got a real look at this horses gears as when asked for an effort he quickly rounded them up and put them away in a manner.

It’s the Truth as Angel heads to the Derby

One important aspect to this horse is he is a winner that’s seven starts now for four wins, he likes to beat the other horses home and no more was this evident when he was put under pressure on Saturday-he puffed the chest out and went for home he wanted to grind them into the ground…. a good trait for a racehorse.
7 Day turnaround to the AJC Australian Derby
The query going into next week will be how does he “back up” and perform at a higher level in a weeks time. A seven day turnaround is not something he has done in his career to date and is always a query. Some horses relish it others wilt and time will tell but make no mistake he goes into the Sydney Racing tips AJC Australian Derby a live chance.
Verry Elleegant was Verry Good
Verry Elleegant raced in to favouritism for the Sydney Racing tip ATC Oaks with her stunning win in the Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill racecourse on Saturday and she would be the first horse to win the double in over a decade if successful.
The filly showed great ability in New Zealand before she even raced. She was nearly sold to Australia before she started. It wasn’t long until the big offers came and Weir became her trainer but Chris Waller is now the man after Weirs ban from racing and what a difference he has made for the racing manners of Verry Elleegant.
Gear change masterstroke from Chris Waller
On Saturday she wore the “ear muffs”, these are a lycra/foam type material that is placed over the horses ears to dim the outside noise and generally calms the horse down in the process. These were used to great effect with her at Rosehill racecourse on Saturday prompting winning jockey James McDonald to say “I could’ve had her wherever I wanted in the run the ear muffs were a masterstroke by Chris Waller”
There is a very delicate path to be walked with this filly in relation to race day gear. McDonald is now of the opinion that the blinkers may now be needed to keep here focussed when she hits the front because she has switched off and “stargazed” after hitting the front at her last two runs. There is no better man to figure out the gear a horse needs than Chris Waller and if he pulls the right reign she will prove to good.
If he pulls the wrong reign she could pull badly and finish closer to last than first so lets leave it to the man who has trained 98 Group winners shall we.
The Golden Slipper did not fit but the Sires will for Bellevue Hill
Gai Waterhouse loves to train her horses to race on a strong speed and Bellevue Hill was a text book Waterhouse victory in Sydney Saturday Racing tips. The stable had a huge opinion of the horse who two months ago hadn’t even been to the races yet. They tried their best to get him in to the Golden Slipper but it wasn’t to be (3rdemergency). It could be a small blessing though as he is now equal second fav for the Sydney Racing tips Group 1 Sires Produce for the 2 year olds on Saturday 13 April.
It was a tough on pace effort to win Saturday but it was a sustained high speed performance which will tighten him up for the big one. Once again the question becomes can he handle the quick back up and we think yes Waterhouse horses are made of steel and he should hold his own in the Group 1 Sydney Racing tips Sires Produce for the 2 year olds this week.
