The Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes TAB Classic is the headline act with the best fillies and mares going head to head over the 1200m. and sharing the limelight on the day is the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks for the 3YO fillies over the testing 2000m.
The massive Adelaide Racing race day also incorporates two Group 2 events. They are the Group 2 Queen Of The South (fillies and mares 1600m) and the Group 2 TAB Euclase stakes (3yo sprinters 1200m). There is also the Group 3 D.C McKay Stakes (quality open handicap 1100m) and there are two Listed events on the card as well including the Listed Queen Adelaide Stakes (2yo’s 1050m).
Of course this is also a prelude to the big Brisbane Racing Tips Winter Carnival that kicks off Saturday week. This will see two months of quality Brisbane Racing from Doomben and Eagle Farm. Many trainers with their horses will head to both Brisbane and Adelaide as the Sydney Racing Carnival comes to a conclusion. Before we know it, the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival will be upon us.

Robert Sangster TAB Classic Stakes (Group 1 Fillies & Mares WFA 1200m
The Robert Sangster Stakes TAB Classic is a weight for age race for the Fillies and Mares run over 1200m at Morphettville racecourse over 1200m at Group 1 level. Originally the “Swettenham Stud Stakes” named after the breeding empire of racing leviathan Sir Robert Sangster, the race became named in his honour after his passing in 2004 and the race still carries his name in the official registry it is now known as the TAB Classic.
The race attracts the top line fillies and mares looking for the coveted Group 1 in the pedigree and being at weight for age it sorts out the women from the girls so to speak. The race is a two pronged headline on “Ladies day” being run on the same day as the Oaks for the staying 3yo Fillies.
Australasian Schweppes Oaks group 1 3yo Fillies set weights 2000m
The Schweppes Oaks is a Group 1 race run for the 3yo Fillies run under set weights conditions over 2000m at Morphettville racecourse worth $400,000. The race has a long history first being run in 1982 when won by the great Rose of Kingston who has gone on to be one of the great broodmares and was also an Australian Horse of the year winner, Mannerism was another very famous winner of the race in the early 90’s. Other horses to win or run well in this race and have success are Delicacy (2015) and Zarita (2008) who after winning the Oaks went on to win the SA Derby against the boys the week later, and in 2011 3rd placegetter Southern Speed went on to win the Melbourne Racing Tips Caulfield Cup, so there is history that shows quality can come out of this race.
TAB Euclase Stakes Group 2 3yo Set Weights 1200m
The TAB Euclase Stakes is a Group 2 race for 3YO’s at set weights run over 1200m at Morphettville Racecourse worth $175,000. The race attracts the top line local 3YO’s and the Group 2 status sees the interstaters make the journey. The race was won last year by Valour Road from WA who had raced in an open age 1000m race (rating 72) before coming to Adelaide to win, the horse then went around a big hope in the Goodwood a fortnight later running 6th, an interesting note out of last years race is that Gytrash ran 3rd and has gone on this season to be a super horse at Group 1 level!! Given the different paths taken to this race (interstate invaders and locals) there is no specific lead up race however the Redelva Stakes run a fortnight is the traditional lead up race.
Queen of the South Stakes Group 2 Fillies & Mares 1600m
The Queen Of The South Stakes is a Group 2 race for Fillies and Mares run over 1600m at Morphettville Racecourse worth $175,000. With not many Group 2 races around the country dedicated to the Fillies and Mares this race has extra interest for the interstate raiders. The traditional lead up to this race is the Laelia Stakes (1600m) or the Auraria Stakes (1800m) for those fillies who didn’t stay. The race last year was won by Music Bay trained by Phillip Stokes who ran in a mile race at Caulfield at its start before.
DC McKay Stakes Group 3 Quality handicap 1100m
The D.C Mckay Stakes is a Group 3 race run under quality handicap conditions run over 1100m at Morphettville racecourse worth $120,000. This race can be either a final destination or a stepping stone to the Goodwood depending on the horses talent. The R.N Irwin Stakes is often used as a lead in to this race run 2 weeks earlier. This race last year was won by Despatch who had come through the Oakbank Stakes (this year run as the Hills Railway) and Despatch then went on to win the Group 1 Goodwood.
Queen Adelaide Stakes listed 2yo Set Weights 1050m
The Queen Adelaide Stakes is a Listed race run at set weights over 1050M at Morphettville racecourse worth $100,000. Absolute Flirt was last years winner defeating Balabel with Lil Kontra third, it has turned out to be a terrific performance.
Port Adelaide Cup listed Quality Handicap 2500m
The Port Adelaide Cup (formerly known as the “Queens Cup”) is a Listed event run over 2500M at Morphettville for $100,000. The race attracts the dour type stayers who are looking for another level of achievement than the general run of the mill distance events. Generally the race is won by a pure one paced staying type, although Yogi did win the race a couple of years ago and has performed well since.
