Run on the Sunday after the AFL Grand Final (Sunday 30 September), the Melbourne Racing Tips Underwood Stakes is a Group 1 race run at weight for age over 1800m at Caulfield Racecourse. Underwood Stakes – key Melbourne Spring Carnival race
The Underwood Stakes is one of the key markers during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. For those pushing a case strongly for the greater riches to come like the Melbourne Racing Tips Caulfield Cup, Cox Pate and Melbourne Cup the Underwood Stakes becomes a key race.
Underwood Stakes – past winners
The Underwood Stakes is the first WFA race over the Melbourne Racing Tips Spring Carnival that is run over further than a mile. There is no question that the Underwood Stakes is a top class horses race with So You Think, Octagonal Northerly, It’s a Dundeel and Weekend Hussler all pointing to some class being needed to win this one.
Underwood Stakes – lead up races
Horses feed into this race from races like the Feehan Stakes or the Makybe Diva Stakes run or the Memsie Stakes earlier over the Melbourne Racing Tips Carnival the horses out of this race will generally use the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes over 2000m as their next stepping stone.
Cox Plate and Underwood Stakes – double bonus
Racing Victoria have also announced a bonus for any horse that can win the Underwood Stakes/Cox Plate double ensuring this will drag a capacity top line field. The Underwood Stakes despite being a good horses race hasn’t been kind to punters. Only Black Heart Bart being favourite to have won the race over the last 10 years. One other aspect to consider is that history will show risking mares in this race is a good betting move. Only 2 have won in the last 35 years (admittedly Boneval in 2017 was the latest but Tristarc was the one before in 1985).
Melbourne Racing Tips – Thousand Guineas Prelude
Underwood Stakes day also sees the running of the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude. This is a set weights and penalties race for the 3yo Fillies who are preparing themselves for greater heights during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. They will have a tilt at the prestigious Group 1 Thousand Guineas run two weeks later at Caulfield. As well this race supplies some real insight into those horse who may be suited to the mile of the Group 1 Thousand Guineas. It can also highlight those who are a genuine risk at getting a strong mile.
Melbourne Racing Tips – Caulfield Guineas Prelude
The Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude is also run on the same card as the Underwood Stakes. This is the “males” version as they head towards the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas in a fortnights time as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. This race is a terrific lead in for the Melbourne horses heading to the Guineas and once again gives us an indication whether these horses may be able to perform at a mile. A lot of the time in this race they are stepping to 1400m for the first time. Winning the Prelude hasn’t been the ultimate recipe for taking out the Caulfield Guineas with only Helmet and Anacheeva doing the double in the last decade.
