Melbourne Cup – Aussies versus International Raiders
For the first time in many years there seems to be a very even spread at the top of the Melbourne Racing Tips Melbourne Cup betting market between the local Aussie chances and the overseas raiders. No doubt Covid-19 has tempered the international invasion. Australia now looking to win the Melbourne Cup “back to back” after the overseas raiders had won 5 of last 9 Cups before the Danny O’Brien trained Vow And Declare clawed it back to 5 all over the last decade. Lets have a look at how the Internationals shape up against the Aussies.
Melbourne Cup – Overseas Visitors
N21 TIGER MOTH $8
Based in Ireland This Aiden O’Brien trained star is the most unlikely of favorites for the great race. The fact a horse having just its fifth start could be the raging Melbourne Cup fav would have Bart Cummings turning in his grave. This race is for seasoned hardened handicappers not for horses having their fifth run. The horse is a last start winner in the Group 3 Kilternan Stakes and with 52.5 kg follows a similar profile to Cross Counter a previous Melbourne Cup winner.
N5 SIR DRAGONET $8.50
Obviously now trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace so it’s a bit cheeky to have him here, but from a profile perspective they have only had him 2.5 weeks. His Cox plate win was outstanding and when you hear someone the calibre of Glenn Boss say the horse was going quicker on the line not slower and would be the perfect Melbourne Cup horse you have to listen to him. He was the last man to take the Cox Plate/Melbourne Cup double with the great mare Makybe Diva.
N1 ANTHONY VAN DYCK $8
Another VERY nice horse from the powerhouse Aiden O’Brien camp and could not have been more impressive. At its first Australian run matching it most of the way with Verry Elleegant in the Caulfield Cup. Is certain to get a nice fitness lift from that run and provided can handle the rough and tumble of the Melbourne Cup with the big weight (58.5kg) will be right there when they run for the money.
N12 PRINCE OF ARRAN $12
Back for its third tilt at the Melbourne Cup trained by Charlie Fellowes and could not have been more impressive in the Caulfield Cup. It was the perfect eye catching run from the Melbourne Cup perspective. He has run 2nd and 3rd in his two Cup runs so far so he knows how to be there when the prize is up for grabs. Leave him out at your peril.
N4 MASTER OF REALITY $26
You have to think perhaps last year was the year for the Joseph O’Brien trained galloper. He had head in front at the 100m mark in last years race and layed in badly causing all sorts of tightening and was relegated to fourth on protest. This horse owned by Lloyd Williams has had an “under the radar” preparation, obviously wanting to get under the handicappers guard. He has been within a nose of winning the great race and it would take a brave person to leave him out.
Melbourne Cup – The Aussies
N13 SURPRISE BABY $10
It has been a 12 month operation with this goal in mind, after being beaten under 1 length in last years Melbourne Cup placed fifth. Connections obviously circled the first Tuesday in November as the target. The horse had a 43 week break and has had just the two lead in runs for the great race, just as it did last year. But 2000m the longest run is a real query considering it ran the 2500m Bart Cummings last year prior to the Cup and appeared to run out of fuel. It will be a remarkable training effort.
N15 RUSSIAN CAMELOT $15
The spruik horse of the Carnival has fallen a bit flat at its last couple of runs being beaten. It feels a bit like the Melbourne Cup is an afterthought after its Cox Plate failure but it may in fact be exactly what the horse needs. It showed a brilliant turn of speed to win the SA Derby last prep, but has been ridden a bit closer last couple. Has really failed to finish that turn of foot, maybe ridden more patiently and over the two miles it might be able to quicken against the handicappers.
N7 VERRY ELLEEGANT $12
For everything Chris Waller has done in the racing world the Melbourne Cup is the one trophy that is yet to adorn his cabinet. This mare is the Caulfield Cup winner and she has shown her grit winning in a dogfight at her last 2 runs. She is tough make no mistake about it however she can be headstrong and race in a difficult manner. There were little signs again of this in the Caulfield cup, but she then settled. Melbourne Cup is a different story if you don’t settle you are done. It’s quite simple if she relaxes she will fight out the finish.
N11 FINCHE $18
Another Chris Waller representative and is back for his 3rd shot at the great race. Was beaten a length and a half last year and its interesting to note Waller has given one less lead in run. It appeared that his run last year he lacked turn of speed at the end, perhaps with the fresher legs this may be the difference between him winning or not. His Caulfield Cup run was huge, he raced 3 wide no cover the whole way and still there with the favs at the end.
N16 STEEL PRINCE $34 No doubt one of the surprise packets of last years race started 80-1 and was chiming in looking the winner half way down the straight and ended up being beaten 2 lengths. Has had a much better lead in here and is the Geelong Cup winner which has in modern history a good form guide to the Melbourne Cup Winner. Prefers good ground so will be praying for no rain.
