Melbourne Cup 2020 – Barrier draw review
We look at the horses in the main markets and the good and the bad from yesterdays Melbourne Cup barrier draw as we head to the Race that Stops a Nation at Flemington this Tuesday.
TOUGH GATE
N21 TIGER MOTH – BARRIER 23
The one time Melbourne Cup Fav has drifted to equal fav and by race time will be displaced most probably by stable mate Anthony Van Dyke. Most likely will push forward and try to get a spot early has the lightweight so may be a chance to overcome the draw by the time they race out of the straight but will use fuel.
N7 VERRY ELLEGANT – BARRIER 15
Looks a tricky gate, she is a mare who from this draw will no need to be restrained early to find a spot. She can resent this early in her racing and it could trigger her to fire up in the run, very important she does not do this.
N1 ANTHONY VAN DYKE – BARRIER 3
This can absolutely be argued either way, three could look a super draw to some, the market certainly thinks so. It has shortened into equal fav on the back of the draw. However this horse will have so much crowding as everyone revs up and tries to get to the fence. For European horses this can be the first time they have felt the pressure and bumping of Australian racing. There must be some consideration given to him not liking this treatment despite being a strong and well credentialed horse.
WINNERS
N11 FINCHE – BARRIER 6
Waller chasing his first Melbourne Cup this horse having its third crack at the race. Drawn to boot up and hold a position, will get its chance at some stage in the straight
N13 SURPRISE BABY – BARRIER 7
No doubt this horse goes back anyway so its barrier draw less important to its chances however this draw enables it to settle EXACTLY where is wants to be it wont need to go back a length or two further than it wants so that is a win in a race like this
N15 RUSSIAN CAMELOT- BARRIER 16 –
For a different reason this is a winning barrier for Russian Camelot. It may force connections to go back with the horse as they went forward from the bad gate in the Cox Plate and failed. It is hard to think they would want to do the same again. One of this horses most dominant efforts was swooping from last in the SA Derby. We haven’t seen him do it since, this gate all but ensures we will get to see if he is definitely better from behind than closer to pace.
