GEELONG – IS IT ALL OVER OR ONE LAST PUSH TO THE TOP

2021 FINISHED 3rd 17 WINS 5 LOSSES (LOST PRELIM TO MELB)
We look at the most consistent team in the AFL for the last decade, Geelong in this AFL 2022 season preview. Geelong year after challenge but fall short and it feel a little like a ticking time bomb as to when the fall will happen…but it hasn’t so far. This makes Geelong quite problematic in AFL betting markets.
There is no doubt the many have been expecting the oldest team in the comp to fall away for some time. Geelong’s ability to always push into the 8 and challenge over the years has been quite remarkable, however the signs were there at the end of last year that the fall is finally here.
Destroyed in the 2021 Prelim Final
The Cats were DESTROYED by the rampaging Demons in the Prelim by a whopping 83 points. They were never in it and it was yet again another failure by Chris Scott and Geelong players at the pointy end of the season. It followed a first week finals touch up by Port Adelaide as well. Perhaps the most telling aspect of these efforts was when Geelong gave up a BIG lead in the final round of the year at GMHBA. They lost in the last kick of the night to Max Gawn’s after the siren kick. It seemed that they had run out of legs and this continued into the finals.
Chris Scott…has the Coaches box tapped out of ideas
HOWEVER perhaps the most telling area of Geelong’s success or otherwise this season is in the coaching box. Having lost a dearth of experience (Matthew Knights to Eagles, Corey Enright to Saints and Matthew Scarlett retires), Scott has set about revamping the panel but also the method of coaching. There will be NO line coaches at Geelong, Scott has said the assistants will work with the whole group not just the lines. But you wonder if this is his way of gaining more control or lacking trust in his inexperienced coaching group (Eddie Betts, Josh Jenkins, Nigel Lappin, Shaun Grigg and Shane O’Bree). It will certainly be one of the more watched areas of the AFL world when it comes to the Cats.
So up or down for the Geelong Cats
The big question for Geelong is how do they inject the dynamic nature of speed and power into their game. They look slow and labourious at times and they yet again have recruited at the top end age group. It seems Geelong have recruited seeing themselves still in the “window” and we are not so sure. They had key players Dangerfield, Cameron, Duncan and Stewart miss big parts of the year, but a lot were “age” related injury setbacks and is age starting to weary the Cats? We are tipping a slide for Geelong in 2022.
