Give them 50 and they will take a mile!

The AFL need to tweak the interpretation of the new 50m rule. The new rule is that the player receiving the 50m penalty must be allowed to advance freely and unimpeded as they now also have the opportunity to play on if they wish. However we saw on the weekend two ridiculous cases in the North Melbourne and Port Adelaide game where the recipients of the 50m seemed to be deliberately running into their opponent after receiving the 50m and the umpires have deemed that the player being run into is “impeding”. We think WTF!! This meant that they became 100m penalties, which turned into goals. Thank goodness it occurred in the pre season but the AFL need to step in now and nip it in the bud before the real stuff begins.

You Give them 10 and they take Nothing!

Yet the total reverse is happening with the new kick in rule, the player kicking in can play on immediately (without kicking the ball to himself) whilst the man on the mark has been moved back an extra 5m meaning the kick in player has 20m between the goal line and man on the mark but they have not used this space in any real functional way in the JLT series. The rule was designed to enable the defenders to clear the zone in their defensive 50 and create more flowing play. The coaches are yet to really unveil what their modus operandi will be with this extra freedom from the back half the season proper awaits and we watch this space with real interest. It has the potential to unleash some real scoring power.
