Essendon v Richmond – the history of Dreamtime at the G
The feature Saturday night AFL Betting Tips game is “Dreamtime at the G”. The Dreamtime game was first held in 2005 with the aim to recognise the contribution of all indigenous players to the AFL. Following the success of the first two “Dreamtime at the G” matches the AFL officially sanctioned “Indigenous Round” in 2007 and it has been a great celebration.
The Long Walk to the “MCG”
Dreamtime at the G has built into a “must” on the AFL calendar with the game now commanding crowds in excess of 80,000 every year. It includes the “long walk“, a pre game ritual created by Michael Long who walked to Canberra in 2004 to bring awareness to the plight of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islanders. It has now become a community celebration event that regularly has 15k+ people walk to the MCG.
There is also the “welcome to country” ceremony which is a ceremony designed to recognise the original land owners and their connection to the land. The pre game has become quite a feature of this match displaying and celebrating the Aboriginal culture with all sorts of dance and storytelling.
…and to the Game – Richmond v Essendon
The match itself shapes as a great battle. Richmond keep finding a way despite an injury toll of A rated players. The Bombers finally rewarded with a win after four pretty solid weeks including two losses by under a kick and a fair effort against the AFL leading Cats.
In 12 of the 14 editions the winner of this game has kicked 90 plus points. This does have the potential to be a big time shootout. Essendon are a high octane team who had to resort to brut defence last week against the Dockers in a low scorer). It was only two weeks ago the Tigers hit the 100 point barrier and were close again on the weekend (95 points). However it does have a little bit of the 2015 edition where it was expected to be a shootout and ended up being a 72-59 dogfight.
Always great to have a big game at the home of footy the MCG and whoever is able to quell the attacking game of the opposition will go a long way to winning this one.
