The Adelaide Racing Carnival enters its second week of the three weeks of the Racing Carnival. It is run during the month of May each year and is conducted by the South Australian Jockey Club at Morphettville Racecourse. Adelaide Racing Tips – Group 1 South Australian Derby
The South Australian Derby is one of the major feature races of the Adelaide Racing Tips Carnival. It is a set weights race for three year olds run over 2500 metres therefore it is one of the last opportunities for the later maturing three year olds to tackle Group 1 glory. This is prior to the new racing season commencing July 1 and after this if success is achieved it is on and forward to the Melbourne Racing Tips Spring Carnival.
It attracts horses who have recently been contesting the strong three year old races during the Melbourne and Sydney Autumn Racing Carnivals. These horses may not have quite have measured up. Alternatively it will be a race trainers target early knowing their horse is on the second rung of stayers. So instead of jumping in the deep end, the South Australian Derby is a nice option to still obtain Group 1 level status.
South Australian Derby – the path to take
There are many different ways that trainers attack the Adelaide Racing Tips South Australian Derby. The two most successful races particularly in recent years have been the Chairman’s Handicap run at Morphettville the week before the Derby. The other key lead in race is the Australian Derby (Sydney) run a few weeks before the Adelaide feature.
Favs have been hit and miss
Favourites have been hit and miss in the South Australian Derby winning only 13 of the last 35 runnings. Perhaps the reason for this is the race generally better serves a horse that is improving (ie we haven’t seen its best effort yet). This is against the fav who has generally already performed at its best in a race like the Australian Derby. They then come into this race as somewhat as an afterthought.
