The Adelaide Racing Tips Carnival is conducted by the South Australian Jockey Club at Morphettville Racecourse in metropolitan Adelaide. Morphettville racecourse is the only metro racecourse in Adelaide and will host all of the Racing including Group 1 races for the Adelaide Racing Carnival.
Australasian Oaks – Background
The Australasian Oaks is a Group 1 event for 3 year old fillies run over the 2000m at Morphettville racecourse. It is run in conjunction with the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes and is an integral part of Adelaide Racing Tips Carnival self titled “Super Saturday”. This is the title given for the first Saturday Racing tips day of the three weeks of the Adelaide Racing Carnival.
It is fair to say that the Australasian Oaks finds itself a rung or two below the eastern states 3 year old fillies races of Group level. However it still carries the coveted Group 1 tag which can add so much value to a filly from a broodmare perspective.
Winning lead up form the key to the Australasian Oaks
When looking to find the winner of the Australasian Oaks race, winning form coming into it is the best indicator. 8 of the last 11 runners of the race have won their lead up race to the Australasian Oaks. One of the key lead in races is run at Morphettville two weeks before the Group 3 Schweppervesence (1800 metres) which has provided 5 of the last 8 winners.
The Port Adelaide Guineas (1800 metres) has also been a nice lead in race. The Fillies use this Group 1 as the key lead in to either the South Australian Oaks or the South Australian Derby run on the third and final Saturday of the Adelaide Racing Tips Carnival.
The Australasian Oaks was won in it’s first year by the mighty Rose Of Kingston and she went on to win the Horse of the Year. Other well known to win have been Mannerism, Tully Thunder, La Volta and Anamato.
Barrier draw and position crucial
Barriers can be crucial in this race. The 2000 metres gives about a 250-300m run to the first turn. Then there is a straight run of about 600m but generally the speed is backed off by this point so if you are wide to the the first turn chances are you will stay there the entire race. Barriers 1-5 have been the most successful in this race.
It’s a race favourites lose more than win with only 15 of the last 35 favs successful. There are 12 acceptors for the big race.
