               Victoria Derby Day 2019

Victoria Derby Day signals the arrival of the biggest week of the entire Melbourne Spring Racing Tips Carnival, Melbourne Cup Week at Flemington. We will be there with all the action of our Melbourne Racing Tips for Melbourne Cup week with our Expert Melbourne Racing Tips analyst Pete Brinky. Saturday Derby Day Tips will be sent out the day prior race day with full form and analysis.

Melbourne Cup Week is a week long extravaganza of topline racing and the crowds flock in their hundreds of thousands to enjoy the festivities. The Group 1 Victoria Derby is a true staying test that can be gruelling on the new season 3 year olds but at $2 million it’s a race all the topliners want to win. The day itself is seen as the “purest” from a race quality perspective with 3 other Group 1’s on the day the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m), and the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) along with 2 Group 2’s the Wakeful Stakes (2000m) and the TAB Stakes (1200m) and 3 Group 3’s the Carbine Club stakes (1600m) the Hotham Handicap (2500m) and the Furphy Sprint (1100m). It’s the top level horseflesh that is here on this day.

The Group 1 $2 million Victoria Derby signals the arrival of the VRC’s Melbourne Cup Week Spring Racing Carnival and week long Melbourne Cup Carnival. The Derby itself is a Group 1 staying test for the early season 3YO, it’s a gruelling race for these young horses and historically can be a race they never really bounce back from. That said the Victoria Derby is seen as the 3YO “Jewel in the Crown” and is targeted by all connections with a potential stayer. Most horses enter this race by contesting the Vase at Moonee Valley the week before, although some come through the Derby Trial at Geelong or the Spring Champion Stakes in Sydney. This race is a big unknown due to the unexposed ability of these 3YO to run the trip, as in general they have not been to the distance before. This is a race that requires speed and stamina to win, a very rare commodity.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes is a Group 1 sprint run down the straight six at Flemington under set weight conditions for the 3yo’s, it’s a real “stallion” type race and attracts the absolute topliners. This race is generally a mix of those who have been contained to sprinting races only, or it is a target of those 3YO who failed to run the Trip of the Guineas or thousand Guineas and are freshened for the 1200m run. You do however need to be in some type of form to win this race, the last 10 winners of the Coolmore Stud stakes have all run a placing at their previous run. The other interesting factor with this race is the fillies have acquitted themselves relatively well winning 7 of the last 19, meaning that the perceived lack of strength (due to testosterone) is not as evident in a race like this as opposed to a Derby.

The Group 1 Cantala Stakes is a mile quality handicap that has had its stake money doubled to $2 million as the “turf war” rages between Melbourne and Sydney it is the premier mile race of the Melbourne Cup Week Carnival. This race was formerly “The Emirates” and was run on the last day of the 4 day Melbourne Racing Tips spring Carnival. However in 2016 it was moved to Derby Day and reverted to its registered name “The Cantala” whilst the Mackinnon Stakes (formerly run on Derby Day) was moved to the final day of the Melbourne Cup Week Carnival. Horses come into this race from either the Group 1 Toorak or Epsom Handicaps or sometimes the Crystal Mile (Cox Plate day) or they drop back in trip from a race like the Coongy Cup.

The Empire Rose Stakes is a Group 1 race run for fillies and mares at weight for age. The race formerly known as the Myer Classic is a big drawcard for the top mares as it provides Group 1 black types which can add tremendous value when they head to the breeding barn. Fillies have traditionally struggled in this race with the high class mares the most favoured in this event. Races like the Group 2 Tristarc and the Group 2 Blazer stakes are lead in races, although there have been topliners back up from running in the Melbourne Racing Tips Cox Plate the week before.
