The Victoria Derby is seen as the 3 year old “Jewel in the Crown” and is targeted by all connections with a potential stayer. Most horses enter this race by contesting the Vase at Moonee Valley the week before, although some come through the Derby Trial at Geelong or the Spring Champion Stakes in Sydney. This race is a big unknown due to the unexposed ability of these 3 year olds to run the trip, as in general they have not been to the distance before. This is a race that requires speed and stamina to win, a very rare commodity.
