The Golden Eagle, Rosehill
The Golden Eagle, after The Everest, is the highest profile race of the revamped Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. It is exclusively for 4 year olds with prize money of $7.5 million to be run at Rosehill Gardens over 1500m. It will be the major feature race of our Sydney Saturday Racing Tips with analyst Blaazing Ben Perkins.
The Everest went head to head with the Caulfield Cup whilst the Golden Eagle will tackle head to head with the Victoria Derby day over the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The two state major meetings path seems to be working itself out, certainly from a broadcasting view point it is brilliant
Golden Eagle a 4 year old classic
The Golden Eagle is a stand alone race in as much that there is no race over the Melbourne Spring Carnival exclusively for 4 year olds. The positioning of the race during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival also opens many different paths for the horses to attack this race. They may come through The Everest, The Epsom Handicap, The Sydney Stakes or at a real stretch maybe even a Cox Plate.
One thing this race is guaranteed to do is allow us to see our 3 year old stars for a lot longer. Generally the star 3 year old colts are sold off to stud for $20 million plus. With $7.5 million on the table connections may be tempted to race on for another six months or so.
How this race will go and what sort of mark it will have on the Australian Racing landscape is unknown. There were many people who said The Everest would not work. It is now the highest anticipated race outside of the Melbourne Cup. Sydney Spring Racing Carnival executives would be hoping the same thing happens with The Golden Eagle.
