SYDNEY CAN GO DOWN AS QUICKLY AS THEY WENT UP

2021 FINISHED 6th 15 WINS 7 LOSSES
We look at the Sydney Swans as we continue our 2022 AFL season preview. The Swans were on the up in 2021 as part of the rebuild and the AFL Betting market is unsure on where they are headed this year.
The Swans were without question one of the more big AFL stories of the 2021 season. After back to back years in 2019/20 finishing down the bottom (15th and 16th) it looked like a rebuild period was on the horizon for the Swans. They had managed to retain their Coach Longmire after he was pursued heavily and it paid very quick dividends. His continued ability to allow his players absolute clarity of both roles and game plan that the youth stepped up and delivered in spades. Sydney’s first half of the season was extraordinary winning their first 4 games all BIG scores (100+ points) and in the main without a lot of their stars.
Young Swans can they keep it going
How the young Swans reproduce or otherwise that level of early season form will go a long way toward what style of a season they can put together in 2022. There is no doubt that they have very quickly assembled a talented young list but as we saw at stages throughout the season this talent will ebb and flow as it does with any young group trying to establish themselves at the top level. At the same time their star elder statesman were really able to play some great footy after some injury riddled years.
Game style change by Longmire with support from new Assistant Pike
No doubt there has been a strong change in directive by John Longmire as well. The Swans clearly played a faster more attacking brand of footy which not only seemed to suit the style of player they have but at the same time seemed to bring a real joy and energy to the young group who like to kick goals. The Swans kicked 100 points or over in 7 games and scored 90 or more in 4 other games meaning that half their season was VERY high scoring. This may be largely influenced by the acquisition of new assistant Coach and ex Crows Coach Don Pyke who was for the main able to get the Crows to play this attacking game.
When we drill down a bit harder on the Swans and what they may produce in 2022 our glasses are not as rose coloured as perhaps some others. We have some real concerns on whether they will allowed to move the footy at such high speed next year. In combination with this there may not be the opportunity for the younger players to get under opposition guard to the level they did in the beginning of 2021.
