Queen Elizabeth Stakes
The Group 1 $2 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2400m is the biggest Group 1 race of the final day of The Championships at Randwick racecourse. It will be the key focus of our Expert Sydney Racing Tips with Blaazing Ben Perkins aka Mr Longshot.
The Queen Elizabeth Stakes has really developed into one of the great weight for age races in the country over. It is raced over 2000m worth a whopping $4million and is the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival answer to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival Cox Plate.
The race began in 1851 it was known as “The Queens Plate” however after the visit of Queen Elizabeth in 1954 it was renamed the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
The mighty mare Winx has won the race 3 times as has Carbine (1889, 1890, 1891) Trafalgar (1909,1910, 1912) David (1921, 1922,1923) and Tulloch (1958,1960,1961).
The Queen Elizabeth feed in races are all quality…The Ranvet, Doncaster and George Ryder have all been good lead up races historically. Under the weight for age scale the 3 year olds who have contested the Rosehill Guineas and starred generally elect to take up the option and tackle this race.
Sydney Cup
The Sydney Cup is held over 3200m and is the premier staying event of the Sydney Racing Tips Autumn Carnival. But in truth it is a race that lacks class despite the $2 million.
There is no doubt that the Melbourne Cup is the 3200m race that captures the imagination of the nation. In real terms there is a massive drop in class to the other 3200m races like the Sydney Cup. It is a race that is generally won by the “true” stayer a grinding one paced sort of horse. The Melbourne Cup however, these days is a sit sprint affair for the horse with a turn of foot.
The great Makybe Diva (2004) and the mighty Kingston Town are two who are reserved for the echelon of horse that qualify as champions to have won this race. The key lead up race and form guide to the Sydney Cup is run the week before and it’s the Group 2 race over 2600m The Chairmans Handicap. It gives a very good guide to the chances in the Sydney Cup.
Australian Oaks
The Australian Oaks is a $1 million Group 1 race for 3 year old fillies over the 2400m at Randwick racecourse. It is the number one staying race for 3 year old fillies during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
There are two key lead up races to the Oaks. They are the Vinery Stud Stakes run 2 weeks before at Rosehill and the Adrian Knox over 2000m run the week before the Oaks on Doncaster Day. In 2019 the 2021 Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant was a brilliant winner.
Queen of the Turf
This race was run at Rosehill over 1500m until 2014 when it was moved to build The Championships Autumn Racing Carnival.
The Group 1 $2 million Queen of the Turf is now run over 1600m at Randwick. Recent history shows mixed results for favourites. We have a mixed bag here in terms of favs and value odds winners. The two key lead in races for the mares are The Emancipation (1500m) and also The Coolmore Classic (1500m).
