The new trend…unanswered goal chains
Once upon a time teams were able to slow the game down, control tempo and stop big unanswered goal chains. Well it would appear that is not the case any more and round 3 was a big example of this. Whether behind or in front, teams are able to now create big unanswered goal runs. Lets have a look at some of these from round 3:
Carlton Q1 7 unanswered goals
Hawthorn Q4 6 unanswered goals
St Kilda Q3/4 10 unanswered goals
Fremantle Q1/2 6 unanswered goals
Fremantle Q4 5 unanswered goals
GWS Q1 5 unanswered goals
Collingwood Q3 7 unanswered goals
Geelong Q4 7 unanswered goals
Brisbane Q1/2 7 unanswered goals
Brisbane Q4 9 unanswered goals
AFL results a snapshot of the games
In the case of the Collingwood and Geelong game the Collingwood chain of 7 goals in Q3 should have
seen it game over. However Geelong, with the motivation of captain Selwood’s AFL captaincy record behind them were able to out on a 7 goal unanswered chain in Q4 to win the game.
Carlton retains a 3-0 position equal top of table and having led all day bar 1 minute of the final quarter but held on to defeat the improving Hawks by 1 point.
Bulldogs were a nice 2.5 unit outlay for a 5 unit return as we took them at the line, won and under total game score in a 70-61 tight win over Sydney.
Adelaide beat Port in the local Showdown in an after the siren goal. Left footer Jordan Dawson shanked the kick but somehow cut back to be a goal. This is after ex skipper Boak missed a set shot 30m out and a over zealous ( see stupid) free kick given away that resulted in a goal. Port at 0-3 has next to no chance of finishing top 4 let alone winning this years premiership. That will be 10 years for Ken Hinkley with out a GF or a premiership…time for a change Port.
Fremantle smashed West Coast in the other local Derby and the Eagles now look in a sorry state of affairs. Their season is shot and Freo continue to develop some nice young talent.
GWS got their first win of the season over the Suns and can get the season kick started on the back of this. Richmond look tired and slow, the chaos game does not stand up any more and without Dusty they look shot. St Kilda on the other hand look alive and well and on this game can have an encouraging season. Melbourne did what they had to do against the great AFL “pretender” Essendon. Big club only based on the number of supporters and cashflow, not based on deeds on the ground.
