Sydney Racing Tips – Epsom Handicap Day
This is one of the great days of the Sydney Racing Tips calendar as part of the Sydney Racing Spring Carnival. From a pure horseflesh perspective probably the most high quality card and our Expert Sydney Racing Tips analyst Blaazing will have the Epsom Handicap as the major form sheet race. The Sydney Racing Tips Epsom Handicap program also includes the running of the Group 1 Metropolitan Stakes along with the Group 1 Flight Stakes. It also has 2 Group 2’s The Premier Stakes over 1200m at WFA for the premier sprinters and the Group 2 Hill Stakes over 1800m at WFA level. And with 2 Group 3’s the Breeders Plate and the Gimcrack Stakes this is just about as good a racing day as you will get. The Sydney Spring Carnival really comes alive on Epsom Day.
Epsom Handicap – a classic handicap
The Epsom Handicap during the Sydney Racing Tips Spring Carnival. is one of the great group 1 mile races of the Australian Turf with probably only the Doncaster in the Autumn being a more famous mile race, It assembles a full capacity field and with the handicap conditions and the differing form lines coming in this race can be a real nightmare for punters to sort out. One thing is for sure Gai Waterhouse has made this race her own winning 7 Epsom Handicaps and she truly is the queen of the Randwick Mile!
The key lead in to this race is the “old” George Main Stakes (now known as the Colgate Optic White Stakes) with 15 of the past 33 winners of the Epsom Handicap coming through this weight for age race. There are two real anomalies with the Epsom Handicap as well that may be worth taking into consideration. A Victorian horse has not won the race in 26 years (Golden Sword the last in 1993) and this is one of the rare events where horses who have drawn wide have at least an equal expectation of success with 16 of the last 32 winners coming from gate 10+.
Sydney Racing Tips – The Metropolitan Stakes
The Metropolitan is clearly the pre eminent staying event of the Sydney Racing Tips Spring Carnival. It is a handicap run over 2400m very much mirroring the conditions of the Melbourne Racing Tips Caulfield Cup. Over the years this race has really been a genuine handicappers race with the weight for age stars who take this route struggling with the heavy impost.
The Main lead in races are races like the Group 3 Kingston Town or the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality, and the Newcastle Cup has also produced recent winners as well. So it stands to reason that the New South Wales horses due to weight of numbers have a much superior record in this race than their Victorian counterparts.
There are a couple of key points to note when it comes to the betting side of this race. In the last 15 years only 1 horse has won at the start before the Metropolitan then gone on to win the race, suggesting you need to be on the horses finding the line hard at the end of 2000m rather than the winners and Favourites have also struggled with only 2 winning in the last 13 years!
Sydney Racing Tips – Flight Stakes
The Filght Stakes is the only Group 1 race for 3 year old Fillies run over the Sydney Racing Tips Spring Carnival. It is the final leg of “The Princess” series and fillies normally feed into this race from either the Group 2 Furious Stakes and the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes. The placegetters from these two races have won 75% of the Flight Stakes with 9 of the last 20 Tea Rose winners doing the Flight Stakes double. So it’s a good fillies race and the honour board is littered with equine talent of the top level including Sunline, Samantha Miss, More Joyous, Streama and the list goes on. Some of these fillies can press on to the Melbourne Racing Tips Spring Carnival if they have the real staying pedigree in them.
