NORTH MELBOURNE IS THE REBUILD IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

2021 FINISHED 18th 4 WINS 17 LOSSES 1 DRAW
We look at North Melbourne who finished last in 2021 in the AFL season as they look to climb the ladder. It is a slow haul for North who are years starved of success and the AFL Betting market reflects this as we move ahead and look at the Kangaroos for AFL season 2022.
There were no doubt some nervous times at Arden Street after the buzz around the the appointment of David Noble (in the Chris Fagan mould). They found themselves winless after 8 matches. There were however some signs particularly after leading the unbeaten Demons for 3 quarters that they had improved. The Kangaroos although ending up taking the wooden spoon would go on to produce 4 wins (the most impressive a win over the Eagles in the West) and a draw (GWS) in the last 12 games. They also stayed within 4 goal margins of 4 other finalists (Brisbane, Geelong, Essendon, Sydney) although not reflected in the ladder position it did bode well for a better AFL 2022.
No 1 Draft pick with North
The off season has been plentiful for the Kangaroos. They have recruited the Number1 draft pick Jason Horne-Francis who showed at South Adelaide that he is mature body and probably the most poised and ready to play of the number 1 draft picks we have seen in some time. They also created a bit of a coup by flying under the radar and sweeping in to grab Hugh Greenwood who the Suns had tactically put on the “delisted” pile hoping to redraft him.
No doubt one of the downsides for the Kangaroos was Ben Cunnington their real ball winner having a secondary cancer diagnosed and needing 9 weeks of chemo. He is expected to make a full and timely recovery which is good news but what it means for his footy season is a little unclear at this stage.
One of the big keys to the back half of the year was players like Nick Larkey, Jye Simpkin, Cam Zurhar playing up to their potential and with some improvement to come from Tarryn Thomas and the youngster Tom Powell there is some nice upside for the Roos.
It will still be a one step forward two steps back but we expect a slight lift in ladder position this year to the Kangaroos in AFL 2022.
