Melbourne Demons look for repeat flags

We preview for AFL 2022 last years AFL premiers Melbourne and after a 56 year wait they finally won a premiership. The AFL Betting market says Melbourne can go back to back and certainly they have the talent to do so, do they have the desire?

What a season it was for the Demons after a disastrous couple of years and coach simon Goodwin. With his job on the line the Demons put it all together for a famous premiership win that was 57 years in the making!!

Forward dominance

No doubt one of the most impressive aspects of the Demons year was their ability to become a dynamic powerful side. They had promised so much in the previous couple of years with midfield dominance but unable to connect going forward. There were a number of elements that fixed the forward line:

 – the inclusion of Ben Brown mid year 
 – career best year from Bailey Fristch (59 goals 25 games)
 – the dangerous Kozzie Pickett hitting the scoreboard (40 goals)
 – Tom Macdonald doing his job (33 goals) 
 – and Petracca with almost 30 goals from the midfield 
Melbourne quickly turned that mid dominance into match winning indeed premiership winning success.

Back to Back…is the Coach the Man

No doubt the question will be can Melbourne back it up. Historically the answer is no…Melbourne are very much a “get ahead of themselves” team. However with Simon Goodwin at the helm (a man who has won back to back flags) and the seeming levelness and challenge that Mark Williams seems to bring to the group the recipe could be there for them to go again.

Can you reproduce career best years

Can players reproduce career best years? More often than not its when a lot of the group play to their best that flags are won. Can the Demons do it again only time will tell (the rising start Luke Jackson, 5 All Aust, and the coach of he year). There is also a big loss in the conditioning department with the highly regarded Darren Burgess moving on to the Crows. the Demons ability to replace him with someone the players trust and respect will have a big bearing in the Demons 2022 prospects. 

We feel it is up to Melbourne now on where they go from here, in other words it wont be an increase in other teams talent that beat them, they can only beat themselves.

The recipe and mix is right with Petracca and Oliver arguably the most important players in the comp and there is still some genuine growth in this group. How Melbourne go will be up to Melbourne, not many teams can hold them so it will be the internal battle and the weight of handling expectation that will most influence where Melbourne finish. We feel they absolutely will be there to challenge again.
