Victoria Derby – the path to Derby glory
Saturday Racing Tips this week will feature the pride and joy of the Melbourne Cup Racing Carnival at Flemington for 3 year olds, the Victoria Derby. The Derby will be the focus of our Melbourne Racing Tips with Expert Melbourne Racing Tips analyst Pete Brinky. The Derby is a Group 1 event held at Flemington racecourse run over 2500m and has prize money of $2 million.
The race was first run in 1855 and Derby Day is the first meeting of the Melbourne Cup Spring Racing Week. There are five horses under 9-1 in this years Derby and last years winner was warning. Victoria Derby – lets look at the lead up races and runner
We have a very interesting running of the Melbourne Racing Tips Victoria Derby. The favourite Young Werther ($3.50) was a scratching from the AAMI Vase due to the wet track last Saturday. No doubt it will have the big job ahead attempting to win the Derby at just its 3rd race start.
Young Werther is trained by Danny O’Brien and if anyone can have the horse fit and ready its him. He did something similar with Russian Camelot last year when it missed a run going into the South Australian Derby. He is a master at producing the horses ready to go over the staying trips. His last run was 2nd in the Super Impose Stakes beaten by Khoekoe who ran well in Saturdays Aami vase.
Cherry Tortoni was the winner of the AAMI Vase is certainly on track for the Victoria Derby. He was getting stronger on the line and it will be a challenge to see how those that finished behind him in the Vase can turn the tables. It is true that on occasions the Vase can be some misleading form as Moonee Valley is VERY different to Flemington. However Cherry Tortoni doesn’t appear to be in this category as its stride indicates it may be better suited at Flemington than Moonee Valley.
Six of the runners in the Derby are coming through the Caulfield Stakes (formerly the Norman Robinson) and it’s a most intriguing edition to sort through. The form lines through the Caulfield Classic are interesting with less than a length between the first 5 over the line. That said Albarado ($7) who won the Caulfield Stakes was a big effort. It sat 4 wide no cover on a very windy day at Caulfield. A nice run was from Hit The Spot ($8) and it is well in the market.
