Sir Dragonet wins Saturdays Cox Plate

COX PLATE – BOSSY AND SIR DRAGONET WIN
Glenn Boss joined greats Hugh Bowman and Brent Thompson as a 4 time winner of the Melbourne Racing Tips Cox Plate with a gem of a ride on Sir Dragonet. It was an impressive win and had both nice turn of foot and nice strength through the line. Bossy earmarking him a Melbourne Cup chance and he would know as he has ridden 3 Melbourne Cup winners. More importantly he was the last jockey to ride the same horse in a Cox Plate win and back up in the Cup.
As a result Sir Dragonet has had his odds slashed from $21 into $8 second fav for the big one behind Tiger Moth. There were 2 big runs of the beaten brigade with Mugatoo who raced 3 wide no cover the whole race and still coming strongly on the line. It looked a BIG Melbourne Cup trial however connections have not indicated this to be the path but regardless of where it runs next you want to be on! The other big run was Arcadia Queen, she got on heels mid race and nearly fell, to rebalance and get gping again was a VERY big effort.
The fav Russian Camelot had every hope Oliver got it one off in the early part moved up to hit the lead before turn but was vulnerable and only battled away in grinding fashion and seems destined to run in the Melbourne Cup Tuesday week. The Runner up Armory ran very well, was no match for the winner in the end. On the back of that run firmed into clear fav ($3) for the Melbourne Racing Tips McKinnon stakes on the final day of the Flemington Carnival.
Victoria Derby – heads Cherry Tortino
Cherry Tortoni tightened up from $16 into $5.50 second fav for the Melbourne Racing tips Victoria Derby after a solid win in the Vase. It was a nice style win as it sat last and then 3 wide around them. Cruised up to the turn and put 3 lengths on them quickly, challenged but lifted well in the straight for strong win. There is no doubt it will be a better horse on the open expanses of Flemington but Patrick Payne will ensure he ticks every box. He could be the first horse since Efficient (2006) to win the Vase/Derby double. The runner up Khoekhoe ran home nicely but is not in Derby nominations, not sure where they go next.
Melbourne Cup Miami Bound
Jockey Jamie Kah was the dominant jockey on Melbourne Racing Tips Cox Plate day with 4 winners and the ride on Miami Bound in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup was one of her best. Last years Oaks winner went around at big odds on the weekend but with the wet track and getting out to its distance range she is on track to take her place in the Melbourne Cup. On the back of that run she firmed from $201 into $34 for the Melbourne Cup. The issue with this horse as described by Kah post race is she doesn’t like being caught in traffic. In other words she needs clear air to race at her best and you just don’t get that luxury in a Melbourne Cup.
Of the beaten brigade the Melbourne Cup hopes of Shared Ambition looks in tatters and will need to win the Lexus on Derby Day to qualify for the Cup. Oceanex who was already Melbourne Cup qualified ran ok near the pace grinding away the last bit and is $51 for the Melbourne Cup.
