Caulfield Guineas

The Caulfield Guineas is a Group 1 race run over the testing 1600m at the Caulfield racecourse as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The prize money for the race is $2 million. This race has significance in so many ways but probably most famous for being a âstallion makerâ. The winner of this race if still a colt can go on and command a $20-30 million sale to a stud as being a cream of the crop 3 year old is very much desired.
It’s an interesting race in that it brings together a mix of sprinter/milers and those that can run 2000 metres plus. Many of the horses competing would have come through the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) or the Bill Stutt Stakes over 1600m at the Valley. Some runners will come through the Golden Rose Stakes in Sydney.
Also you can get a progressive type of horse from the provincials come to town and have a shot at the step up in grade. The most intriguing part of this race is can the horse run a mile. Many are having their first shot at this distance and although they may be giving every indication they will get the 1600m you never really know until they do.
Caulfield Guineas odds
Top rated horses for the Caulfield Guineas are:
$2.80 Anamoe
$3.90 Artorius
$13.00 Tiger of Malay
$15.00 Lightsaber
$17+ all other runners
The Toorak Handicap is one of Australiaâs most prestigious mile races and it is almost 140 years old and steeped in so much tradition. This race is tended to be won by a more âbrilliantâ type horse. This horse is unlikely to stretch out to the 2400m the following week for the Caulfield Cup. As a lead in to this race horses may have had a run in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes, Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke or the Group 1 Makybe Diva may even be a path. Since the alteration in the handicapping methods favourites have fared well in this race. Top rated horses for the Toorak are:
$2.70 Iâm Thunderstruck
$5.50 Elephant
$10 Dice Roll, Tofane
$12.00 Sierra Sue, Superstorm
$17.00+ all other runners
