MELBOURNE RACING MACKINNON STAKES DAY
The Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes has recently been moved from Victoria Derby Day to now be the headline act on “final Day” of “Family Day” as it has become to be known on the 4th and final day of the Flemington Melbourne Spring Racing Tips Carnival. This raceday generally a little quieter without the same party atmosphere that preceeds the previous 3 days of te carnival, however still great racing to be had with the Group 1 Darley Sprint Classic (1200m) the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) and the Group 3 Chatham Stakes and the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth (2600m). The Mackinnon Stakes will be the focus race of our Melbourne Racing Tips with our resident Melbourne Racing Tips Expert Pete Brinky.
MELBOURNE RACING TIPS G1 MACKINNON STAKES
The Mackinnon stakes is a weight for age race run over 2000m and for many used was used with great success by trainers as the final tune up to the Melbourne Cup formerly run on Derby Day (until 2016) this race used to be a good guide to a horse who may win it then drop 7-8 kg in the Melbourne Cup in fact terehave been 14 horses win the Mackinnon and then back up and win the Melbourne Cup it’s a trick Bart Cummings used with great success for many years, however now being on the Final day there is now a different style of horse that contests the big one, its probably a weakened version of the Cox plate with genuine weight for age horses versus a mixture of strong handicappers.
G1 DARLEY SPRINT CLASSIC
This is the ultimate Sprint race over the Melbourne Racing Tips Spring Carnival and with a doubling in prizemoney this year the race is now worth $2 million. It’s a weight for age sprint run down the straight 1200m at Flemington on the final day of the carnival. Since the inception of “The Everest” this has been the key lead in sprint race with Redzel (winner Everest) and Santa Anna Lane (run on 6th in Everest) winning the 2 runnings of the Darley Sprint Classic since The Everest inception and there is no doubt the 3rd running of The Everest will be the key formlines leading in.
G2 MATRIARCH STAKES
The Matriarch Stakes is a Group 2 race for the Mares only run at 2000m under set weights and penalties. This race generally sees the staying fillies from the previous 3 yo season compete if they didn’t measure up to the cups races and also being a mares only race gives great credibility in the Breeding barn if able to win. Races like the Grop 1 Empire rose or the lead up mares race at the valley on Manikato stakes (Seppelt wines handicap) night have become popular pathways to this ladies only race.
G3 CHATHAM STAKES
The Group 3 Chatham Stakes is a Group 3 open handicap run at Flemington over the 1400m on the Final day of the Flemington Carnival, this used to be run on Derby day and used as the lead in race to the Group 1 mile race on the final day but with the Mile race being moved to Derby day (Cantala stakes formerly the Emirates) the lead in form is totally different now and a bit unknown.
G3 QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES
The Queen Elizabeth is a Group 3 race run over 2600m as a quality handicap on the final day of the Flemington Cup week spectacular. This style of race is most often suited to horses coming through the Caulfield or Moonee Valley cups who don’t gain a start in the Big Melbourne Cup the Tuesday before. Its also not unusual to see some of these horses tackle the Sandown Classic the following week as the Melbourne Racing Tips carnival draws to a close. This race due to its timing certainly attracts a “better” than Group 3 level stayer
