GOLD COAST… THE SPOON BECKONS AGAIN

Gold Coast Suns, it looks another tough year in 2022

2021 FINISHED 16th 7 WINS 15 LOSSES

We look at the AFL’s latest franchise team the Gold Coast Suns and we preview their 2022 season. Most pundits in the AFL Betting markets have them finishing in a lowly position again. The Suns have finished 17th, 18th, 14th and 16th the last 4 years which doesn’t look well for 2022.

There was somewhat an air of expectancy around possible improvement for the Suns after a slightly improved 2020. However 2021 was terrible and they lost all semblance of structure and desire to compete for the entire game. they quite often turned up there toes when the heat was on and offered little resistance.

No doubt the sideshow through the whole season for 2022 will be Stewart Dew out of contract with the AFL no doubt looking to secure a deal with Alistair Clarkson. Is Clarkson finally the one to perhaps try and bring some type of credibility to this footy club.

Last year was abysmal for the Suns, with the exception of a few individual break out seasons from the likes of Touk Miller, Ben King, Jack Lukocious and defender Sam Collins. The rest of the group played well below their best both individually and together. When you have a group that plays well below their best it’s a systemic issue that generally relates to culture and generally players not being clear on what is required of them by the coach. The Suns lost 3 of their last 4 games by an average of 85 points which is hardly the way a young team wants to finish the year.

Game plan needs to be back to basics

In its most truest form the Suns simply have to get back to basics. They need to want to compete something that was missing in a majority of their matches this year. There seems a real lack of leadership at this club and when you look at their recruiting strategies they have never really looked to improve this angle. It is a MUST for the Suns to develop into a side with any sort of consistency.

This club would be giving the AFL some sleepless nights and as much as they have committed to this club there has been nothing coming back. There doesn’t look any hope on the horizon the future of this club on the Gold Coast and it has to be in serious doubt. This is especially so with Tassie looming large in the background.

Its pretty hard to have any level of enthusiasm for this club. With an away game in Perth to start the year against the Eagles and then with 5 of their next 9 games against top 8 teams from last year its hard to see how they can get any momentum. There is some chance that Coach Dew will be under all sorts of pressure and a wooden spoon beckons for the Suns.
