COX PLATE 2019

MELBOURNE RACING TIPS – COX PLATE DAY

The Cox Plate is the Weight For Age Heavyweight battle of Australasian racing. It is held at Moonee Valley racecourse and our Cox Plate Tips well be the focus of our Expert Melbourne Racing Tips analyst Pete Brinky. Cox Plate is the second largest race after the Melbourne Cup as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. In fact the Saturday Racing Tips Cox Plate day is part of the broader Moonee Valley Racing Carnival which has 20 races in 24 hours. This includes the Friday night meeting at The Valley and the G1 Manikato Stakes.

The Cox Plate is raced over 2040 metres under weight for age conditions and has the unique aspect that the Moonee Valley Racing Club use their discretion to assemble the final field. This means it is not always decided on the traditional “order of entry”. The race day is Moonee Valleys main meeting over the Melbourne Racing Tips Spring Carnival and the “amphitheatre” atmosphere that the grandstands create at Moonee Valley makes it one of the great days race viewing. The Cox Plate is well supported with four Group 2’s run on the day the Group 2 Fillies Classic (1600m) the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) the Group 2 Vase and the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m).

MELBOURNE RACING TIPS – GROUP 1 COX PLATE

The $5 million Cox Plate is billed as “the greatest show on turf” and this year for the first time in a long time there will be no Winx. This means we will have a different winner of the Cox Plate as she went on to win her 4th consecutive Cox Plate last year standing alone as the record holder (going past the 3 Kingston Town won).

There is no question that this race run at Weight For Age is the heavyweight battle of the turf in its most purist form and run over the middle distance of 2040m at the Moonee Valley racecourse. As part of the ongoing “turf” battle between Sydney and Melbourne for the first time this year we will see what effect the new bonus scheme has on this great race with a $1 million bonus on offer for the following bonuses

Bonus 1: Any horse that has won or wins the following Victorian feature races in 2019 and the 2019 Cox Plate will be eligible for a $1 million bonus:
The All-Star Mile, Australian Guineas, Australian Cup, Alister Clark Stakes, Memsie Stakes, Makybe Diva Stakes, Feehan Stakes, Underwood Stakes, Turnbull Stakes, Toorak Handicap, Caulfield Guineas, Thousand Guineas or Caulfield Stakes.

MELBOURNE RACING TIPS – GROUP 2 FILLIES CLASSIC

The Group 2 Fillies Classic is a set weights race over 1600m for the 3YO fillies worth $200,00 and many Fillies use this race as their final tune up into the Group 2 Wakeful stakes on their way to the oaks. Fillies come into this race through races like the Edward Manifold stakes or even the Group 1 Thousand Guineas.

MELBOURNE RACING TIPS – GROUP 2 CRYSTAL MILE

This is a Group 2 race run under weight for age conditions over the 1600m at Moonee Valley Racecourse. The race was traditionally run as a handicap until 2012 when it reverted to a weight for age race. This allows the race programming to incorporate the Toorak into this race then the Group 1 Cantala stakes over Melbourne Cup week at Flemington. Historically this race has really lent itself to Moonee Valley specific horses those who handle the tight turning strathayr surface and can run a strong mile have a nice advantage over their opposition.

MELBOURNE RACING TIPS – GROUP 2 VASE

Formerly known as the Aami Vase this 2040m race for the 3YO attracts a top class field and serves as the final hitout for the topline 3YO’s who are Victoria Derby bound the following week at Flemington. Horses generally come into this race via the Stutt Stakes run earlier on in the Melbourne Racing Tips Spring Carnival or they may have come through the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas. It is a good race to analyse from a Derby viewpoint, particularly if you can forgive the big striding horses. They tend to not handle the Valley that well but provided they put in a solid performance they can really grow a leg the following week at Flemington.

MELBOURNE RACING TIPS GROUP 2 MOONEE VALLEY GOLD CUP

The Moonee Valley Gold Cup is the feature long distance race conducted at the Moonee Valley Racecourse over the Melbourne Racing Tips Spring Carnival. It serves as a last ditch hitout for many of the “second string” type horses looking to gain entry in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup. It’s a $500,000 race run at set weights and penalties, However winning this race rarely gives a great opportunity of success in the big one the Melbourne Racing Tips Melbourne Cup with only 1 horse (Kingston Rule) completing the double in the last 30 years!
