AFL ROUND 2 THURSDAY 24th  MARCH

Bulldogs v Carlton Thursday night football

WESTERN BULLDOGS VS CARLTON (MARVEL)

Clearly match of the round on paper and a few questions to be answered on two fronts.  vThe first question is Carlton finally ready to put their talent together? They showed a new level of maturity in last weeks season opener. They steadied a few times when a losing margin was building and then swinging momentum their way. It was a side that looked hungry, clear on their plan and they stuck together. Can they back it up this week is a query.

The second question…where are the Bulldogs at after another energy sapping loss to last years Premier. They say a team is a reflection of their coach and if that’s the case then the Bulldogs are wound up like a two bob watch! Beveridge’s now very public “meltdown” was a glimpse into perhaps how this side has not handled their grand final defeat. They had a nearly 4 goal lead and reminiscent of the Grand Final conceded a run of goals against them and the game was done. The question to be answered as so often happens with BIG Grand final losses is are they stuck in the past.

The Bulldogs have won 5 of the last 7 but the last 4 is 2 apiece. Last year it was 107-91 the Dogs in a high scoring contest. 5 of the last 7 have been tight with an average margin of 16 points per game in a range of 3-21 points. We are at Etihad here where the Dogs have won 4 of the last 5 games. 2 of the last 3 have been high scoring, 198 and 203 points total game score. Our model suggests that Carlton will get ahead of themselves to a degree (also coach Voss out with COVID protocols). We expect the Bulldogs to bounce strongly after a week of soul searching.
