Adelaide Racing Carnival 2019
The Adelaide Racing Carnival starts in runs during the month May each year and is conducted by the South Australian Jockey Club at Morphettville Racecourse. Robert Sangster Stakes – Group 1
The Adelaide Racing Tips Robert Sangster Stakes is the only race in Australia run at Group 1 weight for age level for fillies and mares only and is run over 1200m.
The race is named after the late British businessman Sir Robert Sangster. Sangster who was one of the best known owner/breeders in the world. He was the principal of Swettenham Stud and the race was renamed in his honour following his passing. Whilst this is the “officially registered” name of the race, sponsorship rights have also seen it be called “Sportingbet Classic” “William Hill Classic” and “Ubet Classic’’.
This race was moved from February to May in 2006 to attempt to bolster the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival. As a result of this however there is no particular lead in race to determine success as horses are coming through varying races in the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival the Melbourne Autumn Carnival. Locally in Adelaide however the form out of the Robert Sangster can be a very good pointer to the Group 1 Goodwood Stakes run two weeks later as part of the Adelaide Racing Carnival.
4 year old mares dominate the Sangster Stakes
Since the year 2000 4 year old mares have dominated the race under the weight for age scale winning 11 of 19 races. The 3 year old fillies have won five so in assessing the form the fillies and mares in this age group certainly need extra consideration. The great Black Caviar is a previous winner.
One last aspect to consider is the barriers. Due to this race being run generally on rain affected tracks it is important to understand that wide barriers are not a disadvantage. It seems it gives horses the best chance to get to the right part of the track and 13 of the last 19 winners have drawn gate nine or wider.
