Golden Slipper Day is nearly upon us. If you plan on spending the first Saturday of April at this year’s event, it’s probably a good idea to look over the best betting options to try out on race day. Whether you plan on sticking to singles or trying your hand at a multi-bet or two, here’s a quick refresher on what bets you should consider.

Single Races Betting: Win, Place, and Each-Way Betting

A win (or straight out) bet is the simplest option available when it comes to betting. Participants place their bets on a single horse to win. For the main event, like the Golden Slipper Stakes, you might want to set aside some dollars for a straight out bet on the horse you think will win the title race to make things a little more exciting. For less confident bettors, place betting, which involves simply betting on a horse you think will snag a spot in the top three, might be a more suitable option.

The third option for bettors in single races is each-way betting. Most people believe this is the smartest way to bet on singles. Each-way betting consists of betting money on winning and placing. This means if your horse wins, you take home the money for winning and placing. If your horse places, you only take home the money for placing.

Basic Multi-Bets: Doubles, Treble, and Quadrella

The Golden Slipper hosts five group one races, making it one of the most exciting days in the Australian horse racing calendar. In addition to the Golden Slipper Stakes, the other group one races are the George Ryder Stakes, the BMW Stakes, the Queen of the Turf Stakes, and the Storm Queen Stakes. This race schedule presents the perfect opportunity to try out some multi-race bets.

The most basic of the multi-race bets is doubles, where bettors choose the winning horses of two races. There are two versions of this betting style, the Daily Double, which involves choosing the winners of two TAB races, and the Running Double, where bettors pick the winners of two consecutive races. Along the same lines as doubles, treble and quadrella betting require choosing the winners of three races and four races, respectively. This is much harder to pull off, and, like doubles, is only available for fixed odds races.

Riskier Multi-Bets: Parlay and All Up Betting

Parlay and all-up betting is where things get really interesting. These betting styles offer the most flexibility and control over bets placed. Parlay betting involves choosing winners from different races in different ordered sets. Each winning set receives a payout. In all-up bets, bettors have the options of choosing winning and placing horses in different races. In order to win a payout, every choice must be correct. While more risky, these betting styles offer a much higher payout if a bettor is successful.

There’s no doubt the Golden Slipper is one of the most beloved racing events in Australia. For bettors, the sheer selection of group one horses means favourable odds for taking home a healthy pot of winnings, even for single race bettors. Of course, given the selection of high-quality horses, this event is a good opportunity to try out some riskier betting styles.
