Every year, thousands of beautifully dressed people descend upon one of the world’s most popular raceways to celebrate one of the world’s most famous horse races. That famed race is the Melbourne Cup, but what’s that raceway? It’s the fun, fabulous, and forever-famous Flemington. With beautiful views, stunning food, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, what’s not to love about this iconic racecourse? Flemington racecourse has stood the test of time and remains a go-to destination for Melbourne’s finest. Let’s take a look at the history of this raceway and a few things about what makes it so special.

Horsing Around – A History of Flemington

Races have been run at Flemington every year since 1840, when Melbourne was only five years old. At first, the club was known as the Melbourne Racecourse, and, despite being listed as Crown Land, it could only be accessed through private land owned by a man named James Watson. Watson decided to name the property Flemington to honour his wife Elizabeth’s place of birth (Flemington, Scotland).

Flemington has a long history as a hub for horse training. Some of Australia’s top trainers have spent many hours at the racecourse, training horses and maintaining stables. As for the site itself, it has been given a national heritage landmark stamp and is protected by law. The racecourse stood the test of time for more than 100 years, until 2006, when it was ripped up and fully replaced. Out of the long, lavish history of the Flemington Racecourse, one event in particular has captured the hearts and minds of Australia all over the country, and all over the world. That event is, of course, the Melbourne Cup.

The Race That Stops a Nation

The first Melbourne Cup was run in 1861, but the big event would take three years to move to Flemington, where it has remained ever since. Early races were bolstered by the wealth brought to the area by the Gold Rush, and often more than 100,000 people visited the event. These days, attendance at the event is capped at 120,000 to stop overcrowding. This amazing event attracts some of the country’s most beautifully dressed people, as well as some of the country’s top horses to compete in the 3200-metre race.

Outside of the race itself, people can compete to win Fashion in the Field, a fashion event that has been held on Melbourne Cup day for 50 years. It’s a highlight of the day for many, and is one of the chief reasons so many people flock to this day at the races.

Gastronomic Delights at Top Restaurants

The restaurants at Flemington are a perfect complement to any race day. While none of the eating options at Flemington are for the budget conscious, there is a style of dining for everyone. Punters love the casual dining atmosphere at The Precinct, the Home Straight enclosure for raceway action, and the amazing Gallery for top-notch nosh.

The Flemington Races are some of Australia’s most loved events. The Melbourne Cup is just one event to enjoy—the Flemington calendar is packed full of sporting and fashion events that locals love to partake in. Flemington is a beautiful raceway with a rich history and a bright future.
