Lets review the 2 main races from Adelaide Saturday Racing Tips at Morphettville:
Group 1 Sangster Stakes TAB Classic winner at $41
Sunlight and Away Game were the two strongly supported favs in the big Group 1 and we saw them as both tough to beat. However from a betting perspective we advised subscribers to stay away from them on a value basis. The value for us was Bella Vella, one of our selections rated price $12 and won in great style from another of our selections Lyre who stormed home.
Bella Vella – a “failed” broodmare
Failed” Broodmare Bella Vella increased her stud value by plenty with an all the way win in the Group 1 Sangster Stakes TAB Classic. Sent to stud last year and failing to get into foal Bella Vella was purchased at an online sale for a mere $20,000 she has since gone on to win 5 of 10 including the Group 1 worth $400,000.
A strong 1200m was always going to be the query with the mare but getting away with some nice sectionals early was a key to the success. She kicked strongly at the 250m and held off the big late finish of Lyre.
Favourites disappoint
Sunlight was the big disappointment of the race. Connections obviously felt the track was significantly better out wide in the 1200m chute. So she held a straight line (barrier 16) out very wide early but she was gone on the home turn. We await the vets report to see if anything went wrong.
Once again a gun 2 year old failed to beat the older horses at Group 1 level (hasn’t happened in 45 years) when Away Game had seemingly every chance. It must be time now to send her to the paddock for a well earned rest.
Goodwood Handicap in 2 weeks time
The question is does Bella Vella press on to The Goodwood. The answer is no, trainer Will Clarken well aware he “got away with one here.” Instead a spell for her and aim at the Moir Stakes over 1000m over the Melbourne Racing Tips Spring Carnival.
Lyre was the big run from a Goodwood Handicap perspective. She raced worse than midfield off a moderate pace she was 4 wide and unloaded a devastating sprint. If they go to the Goodwood Handicap she will appreciate the hotter tempo.
Australasian Schweppes Oaks winner Toffee Tongue gets home
Two weeks in isolation has proven a recipe for Group 1 success for Damian Thornton. The Victorian jockey took the punt that foregoing his income to meet Covid-19 travel regulations for a fortnight may bring him 3 weeks of success across the Adelaide Racing Tips Winter Carnival. And he was able to begin in the best possible way by chalking up his maiden Group 1.
Toffee Tongue a Maiden winner
Toffee Tongue was still a maiden heading into the race, but with very good seconds to the star filly Collette over staying trips she only had to bring that form to win. Thornton dug her out of the gate settling a touch better than midfield. She was a bit keen early until a mid race move by Moonlight Maid injected pace into the race and she relaxed a lot better. Thornton had a lapful of horse to the turn and kept pinching inside runs as everyone wanted to get onto the rail.
Given she was dropping back from 2400m she was never going to be headed when she hit the front and Thornton punched her out for his maiden Group 1 victory and Toffee Tongues Maiden win.
Blackbooker…Moonlight Maid
Our each way value chance Moonlight Maid was a big run. Jockey Zac Spain seemed to panic mid race and used energy quickly round them she was very brave in defeat and you could argue she should have won if ridden cold. Affair to Remember made nice ground and La Falaise was a big run charging at the end into fourth at big odds.
You can never underestimate these horses in the 3 year old classic races who have been in Sydney when they come to Adelaide. They generally have the class edge and that was shown again when Toffee Tongue took the Oaks.
