Over a Month of Superb Racing Action
The Sydney Racing Carnival takes place between March 22nd and April 26th, featuring major events which take place mostly at the Royal Randwick and Rosehill Gardens venues. The New South Wales government has pitched in an extra $10 million to the festival, adding to the already significant purse offered for the competitions. Racing minister George Souris believes the carnival will generate more than $40 million dollars for the NSW economy and attract top horses, jockeys and trainers from around the world. In addition to raising the international profile of the Australian horse racing scene, the carnival strives to be the focus of horse racing within the country, stealing as much of the spotlight from Melbourne as possible.
6 Consecutive Saturdays of Excitement
Events planned for the Sydney Racing Carnival are set up to cater to all different types of horse racing fans. The festivities beginning with Cellarbrations Ladies Day on March 22nd at Rosehill Gardens, featuring the Coolmore Classic, the Ravnet Stakes, The Ladies Lounge, live music and Myer Fashions on the Field, which awards a prize to the best dressed lady. Rosehill Guineas day takes place the Saturday afterwards, with the George Ryder Stakes, The Galaxy and the Rosehill Guineas races, as well as the Western Sydney Wanderers fan zone and a Ladies Pamper Lounge. Golden Slipper race day is on April 5th and includes a best-dressed competition for both men and women. The action then switches to the Royal Randwick course for day one of The Championships, which includes the Darley TJ Smith Stakes, The Star Doncaster Mile and the BMW Australian Derby on April 12th. Day two of The Championships is on April 19th, with the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the Queen of the Turf Stakes, the Royal Sovereign Stakes and the Royal Randwick Stakes. Both days of The Championships attract Sydney’s top socialites. The finale is on April 26th, featuring the Schweppes All Aged Stakes and the Moet and Chandon Champagne Stakes.
The Richest Races in the World
Government investment in the Sydney Racing Carnival has created some of the biggest purses in the world of horse racing. The Queen Elizabeth Stakes is the richest 2,000 metre race, with prizes totalling $4 million. The TJ Smith Stakes offers the biggest purse for an open sprint race at $2.5 million dollars, while the Doncaster Mile is the world’s richest mile, offering $3 million in prize money.
