Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley Friday Night
The race has had many slots but now is stand alone Friday night meeting at Moonee Valley, the eve of Cox Plate Day. This was done in an endeavour by the club to extend the Moonee Valley section of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Manikato Stakes is a 1200m Weight For Age sprint and follows a few weeks after the other Group 1 sprint at The Valley, the Moir Stakes. Many trainers use this as the key lead in to the Manikato. However with recent changes to the Melbourne and the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival there can be a few different paths to the Manikato. These are through the feature 3 year old sprints in Sydney, The Everest or the Group 2 sprints at Caulfield.
Being Moonee Valley, once again barriers can play a big part with the tight turning track and short home straight. Horses who handle it have a definite advantage. It is the absolute feature of the night with no other Group races programmed. It serves as a great lead in to the big Cox Plate program the next day.
Cox Plate Day
The Cox Plate is the Weight For Age heavy weight battle of Australasian racing. Our Cox Plate Tips are the focus of our Expert Melbourne Racing Tips analyst Pete Brinky. The Cox Plate is the second largest race after the Melbourne Cup as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Cox Plate is raced over 2040 metres under weight for age conditions and has the unique aspect that the Moonee Valley Racing Club use their discretion to assemble the final field. This means it is not always decided on the traditional “order of entry”. The race day is Moonee Valleys main meeting and the “amphitheatre” atmosphere that the grandstands create at Moonee Valley makes it one of the great days race viewing. The Cox Plate is well supported with four Group 2’s run on the day the Group 2 Fillies Classic (1600m) the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) the Group 2 Vase and the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m).
