About Crown Oaks Day – 7 November 2013
Known as ‘ladies day’, the third day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival is Crown Oaks Day. It is a popular race and has the close-third highest attendance records, surpassed only by the Melbourne Cup and the Victoria Derby days. The race is Victoria’s foremost event for 3-year-old fillies; its placement is always two days after the Melbourne Cup. Like the Victoria Derby, it has a set weight and is run over a 2500m distance, with the prize money now reaching $AUD1,005,000.
The Crown Oaks was first contested in 1859 and it is the oldest fillies’ classic in Australia, the most renowned horse to take the title of this race was a filly named Briesis, who also took out two of the other major races during the Spring Carnival, the Melbourne Cup and the Victoria Derby in 1876, which made her a triple threat! Numerous other well-known fillies have won the ‘Oaks’. They included Chicquita, who took it out in 1949, True Course won in 1950, Evening pearl in 1955, Surround in 1976, Rose Of Kingston in 1981, Slight Chance in 1992, Magical Miss in 2001, and Special Harmony in 2003. The 2004 Crown Oaks showcased the most exciting finish to a race conceivable, with Hollow Bullet somehow pulling it out of the bag at the winning post, after looking like she would be unplaced in the race inside the 100 metres mark. In 2006, Miss Finland became the first ever Golden Slipper winner to win the Crown Oaks.
The traditional lead-up race to the Crown Oaks is the Wakeful Stakes, and the winner will show favourably on the Crown Oaks odds. It is run on Victoria Derby Day, and is run over 2000m; this race has been on the spring fillies program since 1932.
Because of previous lead-up races, betting on this race is at a slight advantage to the punter, as there are many previous showings of Crown Oaks runners; choices can be based on education, rather than chance. There previous showings allow punters to gauge whether or not a horse is reaching its stride and putting up a good showing, or perhaps losing momentum as the races commence. Wakefield Stakes allows an excellent opportunity to examine the horses, jockeys and trainers, to determine the best punts for your betting funds.
This is why Australian seasoned punters are seeing this as one of the premier racing events.
