The Carnival is held across the two Major metropolitan Venues Doomben and Eagle Farm run by the Brisbane Racing Club. The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival has really exploded over the last 20 years there are a couple of reasons for this.
The BTC have done a fantastic job of firstly expanding their carnival to a full two months and creating new races and levels of prizemoney. This has made it very attractive for Sydney and Melbourne trainers to be flexible with their horses preparations and effectively target key races
The second reason that the Brisbane Winter Racing has been so successful is a lot of the “southern” states trainers elect to leave their horses in Brisbane to spell. They sight the Brisbane winter sun as a very productive environment for their horses to furnish into stronger animals and in general be happier escaping the harshness of the southern winter. It has proven to be a very successful method with many horses returning to improve to new personal best levels in the Spring.
They don’t need to be spelled for as long to get the same results which means they lose less fitness allowing them to come to hand more quickly.
Brisbane Racing Group 1s
The Brisbane Winter Carnival hosts 8 Group 1s with the first of these kicking off in early May with the Doomben 10,000 (1200m).
Doomben hosts the first 2 days of the Group 1 racing Carnival:
Week 1 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 WFA 1200m
Week 2 Group 1 Doomben Cup WFA 2000m
Late May sees the Carnival move “across the road” (literally these racecourses are located side by side with a road in between) to Eagle Farm which hosts 4 days of Group 1 Racing during the Brisbane Winter Carnival.
Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (formerly the BTC CUP) WFA 1300m
Group 1 Queensland Oaks (3YO fillies 2200m)

The Conclusion of the Group 1s is in late June “Day 4” of the Eagle Farm portion of the Winter Carnival with the running of the Group 1 Tattersalls Tiara Fillies and Mares WFA 1400m
